skimmers are a very good idea.
Do you need one? No, but for a beginner they are an easy plug and play that makes it easier than the alternative and that being alot of frequent water changes or growing massive amounts of macro algae.

Shrimp is cleaning around the rocks and so is the red legged crab. The snail is just roaming around the tank every so and then. From sand to heater, then heater to sand and then to rock.
