lil. Guppy, age does that to everyone, if you live long enough. Not only sick, but creaky bones, and achy muscles to boot. but it is better than the alternative!

Personally I think it's a bunch of crap. Unless you are completely disabled by some condition, you are not going to feel better at home than you are at work.
In my career, I have never taken a day off because I didn't feel good. Days off, IMO, are OK if you will be out of town or have an important engagement, but because you aren't feeling good... that's silly. Sack up and go to work.
Unfortunately, you generally see the same whiners taking sick days over and over again... and often it is the smokers because their immune system is so jacked up as it is that they are walking around everyday on the verge of serious illness. Ever hear the coughing and hacking of an otherwise "healthy" smoker??? When it's not the smokers, it's generally people who are simply hung over. Is it a coincidence that most sick days come on Mondays?
Unless there is a policy of X number of vacation/sick days per year that are a part of the employee's benefit package, I wouldn't pay anyone for sick days.
My rant for the day. If you disagree then please go tell your boss that you have a runny nose and need to go home to watch soap operas.

I completely agree, I've had some sort of "real job" (one where I'm not working for myself) and I've never called in once. Well ok I did once. But I couldn't go 2 minutes without puking. And told the manager that the company didn't want to pay to use the bathroom all day. To which he replied, yes we do as long as your count out the money and lock the doors. So I went in anyway.

On another note, how can I be the only person with this opinion???

No wonder the American work force has been passed by and the labor unions are so strong that they're killing big businesses. For all our tough talk, somewhere along the way this country has gone soft.

When I interview someone for a position here, and they ask me how many sick days they get, they are immediately removed from consideration. I've made the mistake of NOT taking the same approach with smokers.
lol, who knew you'd agree with me...

You should, especially if they don't pay you for them if they are not used. They are giving you an incentive to not go to work.
This whole thing is very easily solved. By doing something the place I work for does. Lump them in with your vacation. I get 2 weeks of off days to use how I please. If that means staying home "sick" or vacation. That is all you get.
You don't get those ridiculous phone calls. "coff coff I'm sick" and it creates an incentive to not abuse the system. Those days you call in are your "vacation days." Might as well use them for what they are there for.

Well that is another thread all together. But I still don't get how liberating 25 million people from the possibility of being taken away and to Saddam's prison (where real torture went on) isn't a good reason...
Second conservatives aren't cold hearted. Just because someone believes there are consequences for your actions doesn't make your a cold hearted sob.

I work in the prison system and we are given PTO time-that is 5 minutes for every hour we work (after 90 days) and it accrues fast...One reason is that our environment is considered high-stress and if we want to bank that time or roll it over,we can't. That time MUST be taken by the end of the year and you pre-plan your days off with it, so as not being a burden to your co-workers; sick days excluded. We are actually escorted off the yard if we have too much time and only a few weeks left in the year. But I sure would not want a sick officer dealing with 700+ crims and making a mistake that could jeopardize someone's life. That's why that policy is in place. On the other hand, re: crimzy's paralegal, we are all cross-trained in our environment/fields, for safety, uninterrupted flow and emergency situations. I am a firm believer in that. No guilt does the sick worker have to carry if someone is there to pick up the slack. That is what IMO makes people go to work that shouldn't and gives them time to get better and do their job more efficiently. And crimz...if U are planning on practicing law here in Florida, wait till U get a load of our work ethic down here. ALmost everything moves at about 5mph and Friday afternoons are nearly impossible to accomplish any business related tasks!! No kidding!

I haven't called in sick in over 9 years.

Last time I called in was from the mangled cab of the pick up I drove for work thinking the ankle I thought was busted would keep me out of work for about 6 weeks, little did I know

I hate it when my peeps come to work sick. I treat them like a leper, put them in the areas with the hot overhead radiate warmers, say "Ew"! Get away!" when they sneeze, I don't believe I've said Bless you yet. When they sit when they find some downtime, I make them get back up and wash their areas again.
Don't come to work sick when you are under me :)

Hmm, I've been working at various jobs since I was 16 and have called in sick twice.

I work at a church, where you are probably most able to take advantage of sick days because of all the "grace" that gets thrown around... but I haven't taken a sick day yet. I can't remember the last time anyone took a sick day at our church.
In fact, today I had to go to the hospital because I was having trouble breathing from a terrible viral infection. I worked all day and drove myself to the hospital as a late lunch. I got rang up with $82 worth of Rx meds... you don't see me crying with both nostrils stuffed with tissue in bed.
And I don't know why people think they'll catch whatever someone else has... it's only contagious in a 24 hour period before the person affected actually gets sick. If you ask me, it's the healthy ones you should be worried about catching bugs from.

We had a Colonel that thought like crimzy. A Staff Sgt. came in with the stomach flu and gave it to half of us. When I caught it, I went over to the Colonel's house, knocked on the door and told him there was urgent business to discuss. I immediately began puking all over his floor and carpet. Made sure and grabbed a towel to wipe my face with. Used his kitchen sink to wash my face. Couple days later, he wasn't in the office. When he got back, he told me his entire family came down with the stomach flu. Needless to say, he never complained about anyone who called in saying they had the flu and were going to stay home.

This is not true. Yes, you can be contagious before you start showing symptoms but different viruses have different time frame for how long they are contagious for..... and the majority are not the 24 hour period before the affected actually get sick."

Crimzy, you clearly have PMS right now.
I don't think anybody should be proud to be at work when they have a cold and getting everybody else sick at the same time. Luckily I don't have to worry about that because I work for myself, but it doesn't make you any bigger or tougher of a man or make people respect you more if you go to work sick. I think that's irresponsible.

That's great news... imagine what an advantage I have over the rest of the Floridians when I work about 10 hours per week more than them.

PMS??? If it's PMS then why am I always this way?
If people stopped getting paid to stay at home and watch trash TV, then maybe they'd make more of an effort to show up to work. It's amazing how quick people can recover from their sniffles when it affects their paychecks. Boss and myself decided that there's going to be some new policies in our office. He asked me to sit the girls down this week when he's out of town and lay down the law. Apparently I'm the hired gun...
