Is this a teardrop maxima?

Picked it up at the LFS for 30 bucks. The lady working there wasnt sure what it was, so my guess is a teardrop maxima. Am I right? He is close to being 3 inches.

The clam is under 260watt of PC lighting right now. He is only 3 inches from the light and directly under the bulbs. I also feed him phyto 3 times a week. Matter of fact it has been gaining color since at the LFS becuse they had that clam under VHO lighting for months and months and was about 12-15 inches below the light.

Gaining color how? If you mean it is gaining a color like more purple or darker colors, that is not a good sign. Crocea clams under good lighting will expell most of thier Zooxanthelle becoming more green, yellow, and metallic blue. If they start to get darker under lighting it is only a short time before they will start to bleach out. I had a Crocea start to bleach under 192 Watts of T-5 which is more powerful than your PC's...so watch it very carfully.

When I mean by getting its color back I mean from being brown at the LFS to starting to brighten up and starting to get his blue color back. The gold is getting much brighter also. Of course its gunna take awhile to fully gain its color back. The lady at the LFS has a few of the same type of clams under VHO thats been in the stores show tank for 2 and a half years but much higher in the tank then the ones she sell, and they have great color and are about 6-7 inches in size. May not be AS bright as it would be under MH but it is still doing great after years.

Thank you, this is another theory that I was working on, ...
Can you grow Clams under VHO lighting, if it is strong enough?
and OBVEOUSLY you can!.... I would say that if a clam is getting more brilliant colors that would meen it likes it!... plus if your seeing new growth on its shell... than thats a plus too!
good luck... I have 5.? wpg on my 75 Gallon and Im thinking of getting maybe a Crocea, or Max..... maybbeeee a squamossa.. but I like the Croceas better!!! :)

Thanks for all the replys. Shawnts106, if you do try to keep a crocea or maxima make sure its very close to the light. Im talking within 5 inches or so. If your rockwork doesnt allow you to do this then you should look more towards a derasa or the squamosa. Im looking around for a blue teardrop squamosa(one of my fav) myself to keep on the sandbed, kinda hard to find though. Good luck with whatever you do though and make sure water quality is perfect and feed with some DT live phyto if possible.

Not to be rude, but I would guess you will lose your clam in less than 6 months.

Its okay, your entitled to your own "opinon". There are abunch of people who invest in hundreds and hundreds of dollars in MH systems so they just try to defend them and say ONLY MH ONLY MH. I expect that, if i had a MH also, id probably do the same. "Not to be rude but" if you read my post you would have read that the lady at the LFS has them under VHO for years now and have great color.

Clams don't die overnight. MH isn't the only answer. Water quality is more important than lighting. Like I said give it 6 months and then come back and post pics.

Before you run out and buy a tank full I'd like to know how long s3al has had this clam.

Water quality is great. Never had a problem with it either. 45gallon tank, 260watt pc, 100 pounds fiji LR, 60 pounds LS, protein skimmer, hang-on filter, 10% water change every 2 weeks and on top of that, I have no fish. Just inverts and coral.
PH 8.1
SG 1.026
temp 79
calcium 450
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 10
The clam is going on two weeks now in my tank. But like I said before, LFS is going on two and a half years in there display tank under VHO lighting. May I add that the three clams looked nice and colorful too. But I do understand why everyone just doubts anyone with clams under PC. Ive also read plenty of storys of people losing there clams under PC. So I know what im in for and just taking the risk and hoping im one of the few guys who DO have success keeping them under PC. No need to tell me " I think its gunna die within six months" after seeing success with only 72watts of PC by Brooklyn Johnny and another success pic by "melev's reef" from -- with his maxima under 165watts of PC. He kept it for 2 years and looked GREAT while it lasted. He then decided to put it under MH and i guess didnt didnt make it. http://www.melevsreef.com/pics/1003/macro_maxima.html

He may not have acclimated it properly to the new light:thinking:

OUCH everyone, calm down.....
Because everyones sysems are different, lights/ h2o quality/ filtration etc.. you never know how somethings gonna respond.. ONLY TIME WILL TELL....
Lets try to be supportive here.... Everyone IS entitled to their own opinions...
I've done some bonehead things and everyone here has been great about explaining why something died or didn't work out, and I appreciated it... But I would have felt bad if I was shot down cold... Let's try to make our opinions gentler..
Sorry, JMO.. I felt bad for this girl after reading the thread...
