how big is a clam like that? In the pic it didnt look that large, but i guess I didnt really get a scale. I know its a "giant clam", but in a reef tank, what is expected size. I dont have a lot of experience with clams at all, except what I love to eat out at restaraunts!

Certainly bigger than what you would eat at a restaraunt! I just cringed. The image of eating something like that finally sunk in and I'm grossed out. Better go get a drink of water.

Lol...point taken, although I have eaten some foods many would probably find gross. Taste like chicken?

Whoa.... This subject really took a turn didnt it
. Oh yeah, aquarist shouldnt be eating anything that lives underwater anyways, if they really "care". So you people who care about a dying clam better not be eating any seafood either
.

my wife surprised me with dinner on valentines day. The surprise wasn't dinner( i am the type of person that would rather stay home) it was the fact I could order lobster. I haven' t had lobster in like 5 years. MMM If clams taste like lobster I am raising them to eat when I start my tank!!
:)
Actually my wife being chinese gets shell fish a lot and cooks it at home. None of it looks very good to me.

Surpsingly I draw a distinction here...people eat dogs in various parts of the world but it is inhumane in this country at least to keep them in tiny cages where they can't move. It is one thing to buy a clam, IMO, and immediately kill it for food. It is another to allow it to slowly die just because you wanted to try and keep it against the majority experience. JMO. So if you want to go out and buy a $30 clam to eat - more power to you...though I think the fried clams at Long john Silver are probably better. Otherwise just make sure it is fresh or get the tabasco out in force. Again, JMO, which I assume I can have. :)

gah!... People are just soooo serious about these things... after all... its just a FLIPPEN' CLAM... its not like its a endangered Co-Co-butter faz- a - raz cake fansy tailed swallow gilled too-tun-common flippen' WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!! YOU GET THE PICTURE!!!!!!..... Geez!.... (takes a short recess from typing to cool off), ok,
LET THIS BE KNOWN.... IF I DOOOOO, not doo-doo, but DO, get a CLAM, it will be a Der. A SQU. or a hippo... whatever!.... BUT IM not rushing out to buy one!!!
With that said.... I HAVE NO IDEA, but I said it! LOL!!!!!!!!

I could care less, FWIW, if the clam is endangered or not. I still don't believe an animal is deserving of a slow death. I want to make that clear, and it is the right of people to have that opinion, and to say it....just as it is the right of people to have the contrary opinion.

WELL, OBVEOUSLY I OFFENDED Ophiura by saying who cares, its not like its an endangered species,
I believe that its cruel for an animal like a bird, or dog or cat or turtle or a fish to die a slow death.... but we are talking about a clam... who doesnt have eyes, a heart, a brain, and feelings, it IMO, is a WHOLE HECK OF A LOT different.... After all we eat clams and fish and... well birds all the time, dont you think its a harable death to be stuck in a deep frier, or chopped in half, or have its neck broken into?
Starvation due to lack of light for a Clam is hardly anything when it comes to a firey hot oily death, or death due to lack of O2...
JUST MY OPINION
and I suppose I should go ahead and say... If I offended anyone... Im sorry!

Clams are just as much an animal as a dog, cat, bird etc. In MY opinion it is just as cruel to allow a clam to starve from the lack of light as it is to let a dog starve from the lack of food... even more so. A dog would die in a few weeks... it could take a clam a few months. JMO

People, at least normal people, don’t just dunk live chickens into hot oil. They very humanely kill the animal. If you left the chicken or the cow to starve for months until it died, you’d have Peta and the Humane Society screaming at your door. Yes it’s true that a clam can’t see, but anything that has life in it deserves to be treated humanely. Even though the clam is a “lesser,” creature in many eyes, it was put on this Earth to serve a purpose and for that reason it should be respected. Starving to death, no matter what kind of creature you are, can’t possibly be a pleasant experience, otherwise, there’d be a lot more little fish and critters lining up for that fate. I’m not saying that I think the clam in question is doomed, and I’m not here to judge. Everyone is allowed to have an opinion and everyone should have one. I think Ophiura understands better than most the importance of our relationship with anything that lives and breathes. There are limits and boundaries that should be respected. When you take a helpless animal home in a bag full of water, that was taken from a place rich in all the food that animal required, it then becomes your responsibility to care for that animal in the best possible way.
Let me also emphasize that I mean no disrespect to anyone.

As was mine. BTW, you would certainly have to try a lot harded to offend
me. Please do not assume that you did....I am sure you are desperately worried about it right now.

An exchange of ideas and disagreements does not mean that one person must be offended by the other, at least not in my case. I strongly disagree with your opinion and think it is sad, but that should not offend you. I am entitled to disagree with you as you may be by mine.
I happen to feel that when we keep animals for entertainment, we should do so at least with the intention that we will provide proper care...irrespective of whether they are clams, seastars or dogs. We keep them because they make us happy, but I am not happy knowing that I have something I may not be able to care for properly. That is what directs me in this hobby...if it doesn't for you, that is your opinion indeed.

So you weren't going to eat the clam? That was all just a joke :notsure: :(

I really commend you for this - I wasn't particularly offended but this takes more guts than many people have on an "annonnnnymous" (I can never spell that so I figure those "Ns" should cover it) board. :)

Just read up on acclimating those Linckia!!!!!!!!! Those can be delicate beasts. Some searches will help. And prepare for possible tang police intervention.
