It's true... a reef safe ich med that actually works!

Hey Guys/Gals,

I just kept reading how people don't have room/money for a QT (quarantine tank) on this ich medication discussion. If you don't have $20-$30 dollars to buy a small heater, 10 -15 gallon tank, and a power head - (and a small desk/counter to sit it on), then I don't think you should be doing this.

All it takes is the change water to fill up the tank, and use a piece of filter media to harbor the necessary bacteria. It is a very simple process to prevent unknown elements in your display tank. Patience is key. When you don't have any new livestock to QT, drain it out and toss in closet. I'm sure there are plenty of places to find info on QT tanks.

Sorry for the rant, JMO.

Thanks,

GC

I always kept a small tank with Mollies going for emergency hospital tanks. They're not that bad looking and keep the QT constantly in good shape & ready to go very cheaply.

Agree, QT can be done on a budget, and the headaches it diverts is worth it.

The problem with the parasite "detaching" from the fish before the proper time in its life cycle is that ****** embeds itself UNDER the fish's skin, then starts to spin, which is why the fish become "itchy". Short of stripping off the outer layer of the fish's skin (like when scorps shed their cuticles), the critters are not going to simply "drop off".

I tried to find the pix and the video showing the live parasites embedded in the host's skin, but I can't find where Renee has them stashed, but if you scroll down to the photos in this article, you'll see what I mean:

Do you have charcoal filters?

Anyway, that medication really is not likely to work.

As far as actual meds that wrk. Cooper is it. It kills all kinds of nasty things but if used wrong will kill everything.

Agreed. To be done correctly w either method u need a qt/ hosp tank. I've used both and both work. Its honestly a personal preference. Hypo is easier on the fish but takes longer.

Hi,

LOL...Since the display has to remain fishless for 8 weeks...what is the hurry...hypo is easier on an already stressed fish, so that would be my choice.

It's crazy that this thread is still alive...
See pages 1-5 for my brilliant counter point.
Love being immortalized at the top of the page.

Hypo while affected has to be done exactly. A slight variation and it won't kill the parasite. W copper add the correct amount and ur done. Problem is,it has to be correct

If you run hypo, one of your biggest concerns will be pH...it WILL be low, but if you can maintain 7.8, you're doing OK.

I agree. Once my salinity dropped to the correct level. The ph dropped as well. You'll want a ph buffer to help keep it up to correct levels
