Kevin's Tank!!!

The leak test was a success!
However there is one leak by the union valve but is just a small drip and its dripping right back into the sump. It is so small it really isnt a factor but I will still wrap it in tephlon tape. The only other problem I found was noise. The water falling into the sump is very loud. Is there a way I can silence it? Here are some pics including the main bucket that I used to fill this tank. Enjoy

wow are you kidding!!! you must of been there all day filling that tank up.. i used the garden hose it took me 10 min..
and yes the water fallen in to the sump is loud!.. i have the megaflow model 3 sump... its all the bubbles in the bubble chamber making all that noise.. what i did was i cut the pvc pipe thats in the sump. i cut just the top 4 inches so that all the cut outs in the pvc pipe were under the water.. that kind of muffled the gurgling! for your drain hoses are you useing the hoses that came with the sump or pvc? if your useing the hoses that came with sump try moving them a bit. i have a box under my drain flex hose holding it up a bit and no gurgling..

lol. I had other buckets but that one was used the most. It took about 2 hours with the help of a friend. The openings on the PVC tht lead into the sump are already underwater. The noise is from the water falling back into the sump after passing over the pre-filter pad. I will try elevating the tubing like you said.

It's getting there. Do you plan on adding a background? If so, it'd be easier to move the tank and either paint it on or attach it.
Any idea when you're going to be getting it going?
edit: I liked the old font better...

Yes I plan on getting a black background. I will start mixing saltwater very soon, the canopy is practically done being painted, and the lights will be wired by the end of the weekend. I just want to wait for some better weather before I order the live rock. I am planning to get, 90lbs of figi, 30 of lalo, 24 tonga branch, and 35 of base.

I had the same problem, the overflow was LOUD. Attach some pvc pipe to your bulkhead that comes almost to the top of your overflow, then put an elbo in, small piece of pvc, and then another elbo pointing down. Just be sure to drill a hole in the corner of one of the elbows, so when the power goes out, or when you turn off the pump, it does not syphone out the water. I'll try and pm you a link to show you what I'm talking about.

I think I found the main source of the noise. One overflow (the one closest to the return pump) seems to be getting too much water pumped into it. This is causing too much water to flow into the sump at once and its causing a horrible gurgling sound. Is there a simple way to even on the power of the return pump? My other overflow kit seems to be perfect.

Lights are wired and work great. Canopy should be done tomorrow. Does anyone know of a good sound insulator for the back of my stand? Is styrofoam the best to use around water?

I have a few updates. The sump problem has improved but its not perfect but I am ok with the sound level its at now. Its tolerable I guess. I have the Typhoon III up and running and have around 40 gallons or so of RO/DI water. The leak test in the tank was a success and the tank is now drained. If I keep making the ro/di water each day I will start mixing salt water ASAP and hopefully will be ordering live rock within the next 2 weeks. I know I have had quite a few deadlines set but some problems have come up that needed to be fixed and I have been a little busy. But I am confident that live rock will be coming soon and the tank will be cycling. The canopy is done and the lights are wired. I am ordering moonlights within the next couple days as well and I will install those into the canopy. Now I have a question about flow in my tank. Right now I have a Mag-18 return pump, 2 Koralia 3's (850gph) and one Koralia 2 (600gph). Will this be enough for SPS? I plan on keeping a lot of acros. I have heard of some people being able to keep acros in a 125 with only 2 Koralia 3's but have also heard of people needing 2 Koralia 3's in smaller tanks like 55g for SPS. What would you suggest? Should I use all 3 powerheads? I originally bought the Koralia 2 for mixing salt water.

Hi Kevin, I've been running two #3 Koralias from the very beginning and things are doing very well (this is along with my two loc lines that are both split in a "Y" and my return flow is about 600gph). I added a birdsnest and a monticap and both are growing pretty fast. I have added an acro, which I believe you have seen a picture of, and it did lose it's color, but I think that has more to do with the fact my alk was way to low. I'm in the process of raising it but I did decide to change out one of my #3s for a #4 (1200 gph). That one is on the side with my acro and it's blowing almost right on it, I also have two purple tip digis in that same area. It's only been a few days but it seems my acros is actually improving and starting to show some color again. Not sure if it's because I'm getting my alk up to where it needs to be or it likes the heavier flow (it's probably both). IMO it's better to have more flow than not enough flow. Having the heavier flow will also keep that red slime away.

Kevin,
Great looking setup!
Is your sump the model 4? Do you have any pics of the right side (I am trying to decide on a sump, and this one looks perfect, but I can't find any to actually look at)?

Thanks I think I will keep all 3 powerheads in the tank.
Wow. 5th page and still no fish. This must be some kind of record.

Ya I am pretty sure its a model 4. Sorry but the pics I already have of the sump are the best shot I can get. There isnt enough room behind the tank to take pics of the other side.
