Hopefully I can get some good pics of the tank early next week. I will finish adding the sand tomorrow so hopefully it will clear up shortly after that.

been reading for a while figured i chimed in a little bit. first off the tank looks great. absolutely great. second off 1 question about your mag drives. do you have them at different levels in your tank? such as hi mid low? and do you like there performance. as for your skimmer it wont really skim anything because there is no bioload as of yet.(if thats the problem) but the tank i must say looks great. if you dont mind check out my tank. here is the link for it.
thanks

Ok I added and evened out the rest of the sand so the water has kinda been refogged. Pics will follow once the water clears. I still need to add 25 more lbs of rock and finish the cycle but I have some questions about a cleanup crew. This is what I had in mind so far:
50 blueleg hermits
30 nass snails
30 turbo snails
3 emerald crabs
2 cleaner shrimp
Does this seem ok? Any problems? Can all of these be added together and about a week or 2 after the cycle?

List looks pretty good, as does the tank! Your clean up crew looks pretty good, I have pretty much the same thing except instead of 50 bluelegs, i have 40 scarlets, they seem to be a little easier on the snails than the blues are, although they are double the price...
Only thing I would hold off on for now would be the shrimp.. i would wait a while for those.. very picky to salt and trate flucts... Down the road you might want to add a dozen or so more turbos (i assume your talkin bout astreas n not the huge turbos) but i would wait to see if you need them later. Again, congrats on the tank, good luck with everything and hope this helped.

Shouldn't be too much. I have a #3 and a #4 in my 55 gal. And I'm putting 4x #4's in my 180. I love the Koralias...

I noticed you said your skimmer was not working. If you mean its not foaming that would be because there is nothing to skim yet. Give it time. Once your cycle really gets going you will start to see some foam. and then in a few months with a nicley stocked tank you will get annoyed with having to clean your skimmer cup all the time

I am not in no way trying to argue, but I was getting foam (white foam) right after I put my sand in with no live rock.

I for one do not like hermits in the DT, they kill your snails to get to the shells and some say to just stick extra shells in your tank, but I for one did not want extra clutter in my tank. They can also irritate some of your corlas, like frogspawn and torches. (If you have the coral hand book, several corals have warnings about hermits in the tank.) Some do fine with them though, so it's a personal choice. I have my hermits down in my sump, even in my skimmer section, and return section and they keep it clean.
After my tank started to get diatoms I then put in my clean up crew which was lots of Nass snails, cerith snails, 3 emerald crabs, and 2 cleaner shrimp. When I got back a week later from vacation my tank was clean as a whistle, so that told me I didn't need the hermits (or the turbo snails which I have been told can knock over your corals).

Tank has cleared up nice. I plan on ordering 25lbs of tonga branch today if not very soon to finish the aquascaping and officially start my cycle. From the looks of it I have diatoms. Once I get my cleanup crew in there they should go away right? Will diatoms take over my tank? My lights have been on a little too long the past couple days so could that be the reason why they appeared so soon? The tanks only been set up since friday.

Sorry the glass is kinda dirty and the camera isnt the best.

Diatoms happens in every new tank, my rocks were almost completely covered. But once I added my clean up crew it was clean within a week. I noticed my Cerith Snails did most of the work. You can cut back on your lights a little and it will help but once your clean up crew gets a hold of it and your tank has been running for a little while you should not see the diatoms again. Consider it an initiation process for a new tank owner.

Oh, and your tank is looking great! I bet you are so excited you finally have a tank to show. How many pages are we on now.

Well apparntly there was some confusion and my tonga branch order ended up getting cancelled
. So I need to re order that. But I didnt my first set of tests today. here are the readings:
PH-8.2
ALK- 1.7-2.8 (normal section on the color card)
nitrite- .05-1
nitrate- 50+
ammonia- .25
calcium- 400
phosphate- 0-0.1
Looks like my tank is cycling. Something happened on the magnesium test so I didnt get a correct reading. I will try that one again later.
