LOL...A lionfish for everyone....
As much as I like them, and you say they can go in a minimum of a 25G.....I think I would rather wait till I could do a bigger one....at least 40 or 55G.....I would not want to feel like I was "limiting" the space the lion deserves.....
HMMM....can they go in a reef tank with a flame hawk, perc clown, lemonpeel angel, 2 yellow clown gobies, and a longfin sleeper goby?????

Quoted from Cranberrys PM to me:
If the lion can't eat it and the mate doesn't bug it, they'll get along fine. They are a super friendly fish. Any CUC will do, except shrimp. They won't bother anything else in your standard CUC. The angel may not be a good choice since I have read that they can be fin nippers..

What's fin nippers? the angel or the lion?

The Angel is what I was talking about. I have read that they can be fin nippers with Lions so it is not a good choice to put in with the lion.... I could be wrong but I read that somewhere when I was doing some research last night.. LOL

The fin-nipping usually has to do with the larger angelfish. I've never kept a lemonpeel tho.
Lois,
I agree...lions do best when given some room, but a D. biocellatus, which really doesn't swim at all, but scurries/hops around, would do fine in a 25 gal...in fact, ours DOES. I'm sure that most fish feel cramped in ANY size setup, but there are indeed "minimums", which is where the "proper planning" comes into play: tank volume and shape, aquascaping, tankmates, etc. For example, we keep our adult volitans in a 100 gal tank, HOWEVER, this 100 gal is 48" x 24" x 20" as opposed to the "standard" 100 gal which is 72 x 18 x 19. Even tho the 6 ft tank has more linear space, for an adult volitans that is basically a 12" cube, once you add LR, the fish has little room to turn around, so they typically just find a spot to perch (often one of the turn-off's to lionfish). So even tho the 4 ft setup SEEMS less suited, it's actually a MUCH better choice for a large-bodied lion (ours is out and swimming most of the time).
This is something that should be considered for ALL fish...look at their swimming patterns and try to match your tank dimensions to them as opposed to just volume.

Absolutely. Set it up so there are some caves/overhangs in the rockwork and a good amount of open area. It will likely be a bit shy at first, but after that, it should stay out knowing that it CAN hide. With this fish, you can stack your rockwork a bit higher since they aren't swimmers.
I do recommend letting it get well-settled and weaned before adding any tankmates. Your fu should be fine with a few peaceful mid-water swimmers (not damsels, but you know this!
).

Saxman and Cranberry in your experience with lion fish - would a 40 gallon breeder 36 x 18 x 17 or a 55 gallon 48 x 18 x18 be better shape wise as you have discussed. Also what are the names of some of the macro algaes I have seen in your tanks. Thanks Al

No, there's no breeders. My friend did get a cool egg sac one time from a breeding pair.
They both would be awesome tanks. The 55 may lead to a better choice of tankmates in the future.
Lemme go look at the macro pics.

Al,
I'm assuming we're talking dwarf and/or medium-bodied lions here. A 40 B is a great footprint for dwarf lions. A 55 would be great for dwarf or medium-bodied Pterois sp. such as P. radiata, P. antennata, or P. mombassae.
Some of the macro you've seem in our setups are:
Caulerpa taxifolia (feather), C. racemosa (green grape): Both banned in many states as a noxious weed.
C. prolifera, C. brachypus (sp), C. serrulata (razor), Botryocladia sp. (red grape), Ulva sp.
(sea lettuce), Codium sp.,
Pink Galaxy,
Cheatomorpha sp.
I know there are a few more, some un-ID'd, but that is a decent list of what we currently have or have kept.

Thanks Saxman - I think I should go with the 55 gallon - yes I am thinking of dwarfs. Thanks for the information

Could you do a 55 gal with a pair of Dwarfs and a pair of Fu Manchus?? Would that be possible or would the 2 males of each species fight with each other??

Finding a true pair of Fus may be difficult. If you have somewhere else to put one or have someone to give one to, you could take the chance.
Those males should leave each other allow. They look totally different and one hangs on the bottom and the other perches and plays higher.
It's more the zebra, fuzzy and barberi I worry about.

I'm practicing staining every day LOL. I'm totally afraid of messing it up. This is a big ole beast to turn out poorly. Everyday I sand down my practice sheet and literally practice.

Thanks for the answer Renee. Was just think it might be cool to do Pair fuzzies, Pair Fus and a Pair of Maroon clowns in the tank. Not sure what else I would put in the tank with them or if I should put anything else in the tank with them.. What are your thoughts on this?

I think you will be limited by a breeding pair of maroons more than anything. If you get them big enough, the fuzzies won't eat them, but I have no idea on the temperment of a maroon.... let alone a breeding pair.
