That's right! And the next time somebody sugguests that you try to do something really really cool, don't do it just because you're afraid to find out that you might suck at it. Snake!

Lois, quick question for ya.
I have been hearing that LED lights are almost non factor in coral growth compared to mh or t5s. Is that true? Does it just sustain it but not enough for big growth?

With all the troubles you are having, I think you convinced me to stay with T5's. LOL

LOL...You know Seth.....if people did NOT try something based on the issues I have......no one would be in the SW hobby anymore
what have I NOT had issues with

Snake, don't take this thread as being the norm. Something weird is happening here. I wired up 48 LEDs in about 4 hours and they all worked the first time and no problems so far. Meowzer what have you been up to.... Bad Karma? or is the forces making you work hard, to obtain your amazing reward. Love the build though. Truly inspiring..

I sent the ELN back...have not heard from them yet though to see if it is defective.....I am thinking YES though.....and of course the HLG manufacturers changed their part w/o really letting us know which one we had

besides that....considering we had no clue WTH we were doing....it went ok LOL

Yea, it helped that I went to school for Electronic Engineer, soldering is part of the 101 class. Haven't worked in the field at all go figure. Turns out in Las Vegas, Nightclub Manager pays a lot more, plus the perks, well lets say the perks are very very good (PG-13). Also I basically get paid a lot to babysit, club basically runs itself.
On that note, if your ever in vegas, hit me up, drinks on me.... You may need the trip by the time this is over.

Meowzer you could probably drink the club dry at this point.....With that said Robert from Jameco did mention about a change, but he didn't indicate any serial number change/cutoff. Basically what he eluded to was the power output was a tad better; more efficient in the update or change.....Nothing major were his exact words......

Someone at the LFS that I was talking to was telling me that it was a bad choice to take down my mh because LEDs just don't penetrate enough light and I have to place almost everything towards top and also it also just sustains coral and zoas and palys but doesn't have big growth like the other lights like mh and t5s.
I'm still very new to this and I have a very little knowledge in this minus the fact I know for a fact that LED will save me good money on electric bill in the long run.
I know that you are very knowledgeable with these lights so, I wanted to ask you before I make a fool out of myself.
So let me rephrase this because even I'm getting confused after reading what I wrote.
Are LED lights strong enough and have right spectrum of light to grow any type of coral and just as fast as any other light?

YES...IF you have the right ones....and enough of them
I AM NOT very knowledgeable....LOL....if not for the help of peeps here I'd be clueless.....
The 3W Cree Leds are the best ones from what I have learned also.....the 1w are not really strong enough (from what I read)

ahhh shocks... that's what I have...
I want a deresa clam but I guess it's out of question....

Thanks for the answer Lois, next time I meet the guy in the LFS, I will be sure to educate the man about the LEDs.
One thing is for sure. My tank is RUNNING COOL and I likes it!
Wife loves the royal blue lights at night and the shimmers.

I mentioned to my LFS Owner about LEDs and told him that I was putting them on my tank. He told me that I was making a mistake. 2 months later I walk in the store and guess what he has hanging from his Display Tank, yup an LED fixture. He then goes to try to educate me about them. I laughed and walked away..... rookie! HEHE!

That actually couldn't be any further from the truth, Sip. But it really all depends on the leds/fixture being used. It's taken a while for the manufacturers to catch up with what some folks have already been seeing and doing for years now and then the rest of the mainstream hobbyists will finally begin to see. That not only are leds capable of sustaining corals. But with specific color and efficiency choices they can easily surpass any other type of lighting system. Patenting issues/wars in the beginning days slowed the progress of leds fixtures being manufactured here in the states. Now that folks have been finding ways to work around that we are now starting to see some manufacturers like Echo Tech, Maxarra, Coral Vue and a whole host of others who are building fixtures that are about to hit the market here soon finally starting to catch up to what some folks have already been doing in their own garages and basements for some time now.
