its pretty big as it is, at least for me. i think ive seen you post on -- because of the signature (YzGyz--wise guys)
i have a 20g tall sump that connects to my 28, but the skimmer takes like half the room. i still havent added baffles and a section for a refugium and am doubting ill have a large refugium
which answer are you looking for? you can always PM luke, he likes to help people out on their mods

actually i use the same user name .. well close to it... ThangBom321 on --... i been there for a while .. read and looked through the forum for a year or two before i became a member.... im not looking for a specific answer as i have done all the mods just about.. ( im going to try another venturi one day... need to borrow a meter again before i try it... and try the restricting of the suction side ... im in no rush though cuzz it;'s pulling like a mad man as is.. i just want it better... lol... )
pic a a water bottle w/ airline inserted into a cap w/hole drilled..

the skimmer itself... thats a 1 gal hi-c bottle i use for diy RHF 2 part

(water lvl is 1/2'' under the taper from the reaction chamber)

heres a question for you...would increasing the tube size for the venturi help increase the bubbleage

at first i thought it was as simple as that but after reading and messing around w/pumps and skimmers.. i found that there is more to it.. ( like how i use to think that more water flow = more volocity= more air pull... but no.. not true.. the mesh mod sucks less water and pull more air) imo.. any pump can be moded to pump more air for the application of skimming.. and by far.. from all the toying i have preformed, the pf4 is the best..
as for simply enlarging the venturi to increase air... it may and may not.. sry can't be too exact with it cuzz "what if" the impellars design is maxed out at the air draw that it is preforming at now.. increasing the venturi will do nothing.. on the other hand.. what if it's not?... then you Will get an increase in air... so imo.. try it.. it's cheap and easy to do.. drill out the old venturi and see the buble lvl.. if it increases that GOOD... if now.. well.. not much to loose except maybe some air intake noise as the intake is enlarged and less air velocity ...
the pf4 is a simple mod.. you just simply take pf4 ( i got a 8x8 inch sheet for like $6 or something off bay) and replace the old pinwheels with it.. secure it w/ fishing line ( i weaved in and out about a dozen times..to make sure it dont come apart.. and any weaving i did add to the mesh ) and trim to the same size as the OG pinwheel size..put it ack together and check to see if nothing is rubbing in the volute.. ( this will cause drag making the pump have to work harder- more wattage and over time.. the rubbing will wear though ....
USE A KILL-A-WATTER METER when you fire it back up.. watch it for about 5 mins and see if the pump draws more energy.. if it do.. take some mesh off or trimm it down some... and repeat..

you recommend replacing the needle wheel completely? i believe hurt only placed 1 layer of the mesh at the front of the needle wheel. pros? cons?

hum.. im missing a little.. i recommend replacing the top layers of needles if the wheel is like the OR or octo pumps.. they look like spokes on a tire ( take a kitchen knife and slide it between the layers.. work your way around to crack the glue.. then pry after to get the wheel off.. this is what i done..) as for wheels like the sedra.. they look like a plate with needle poking outward ( i have not done it but read many that have) clip off most of the pin ( leave some as to help grip and keep the mesh in place.. but keep the pins symetrical.. as to keep the impellar balanced) drill holes symetricaly to be abole to loop securing line though .. the reason shy they take off part of the old impellar is to reduce weight and drag...
pf4 is the name of the mesh material..

thats why i said use the meter....
with some tinkering w/skimmer and mesh mod, you can get the skimmer to pull more air and run less energy ( many have done it.. )
