So, I was looking closely at my tank this afternoon right after I turned the lights on. there are amphipods all over my rocks. And I think I even saw them mating. lol. It's so exciting!

Whats the stock list at now Jess? Are you still running lights at 1/2 what your cycle was? I know it sounds bad but you dont have to feed every day. I like to feed every day but had to learn that you have to really watch it not to over feed. If you cut your feedings back to every other or every third you may get that battle won. Just a thought.

What are you fighting it with?
Well, water changes which I need to be more consistent with :( I am leaving my lights on for 6 hours only, no seperate actinics unfortunately. I am only feeding every other day. which over feeding isn't a problem. I have one fish that eats pellets and mysis. I spot feed her and she never misses her food.

I have cut my feedings down to once every other day. I need to get better with my water changes. I think that's the key.

I think your gonna find the water movement and other sources of waste to be the key. I read about different people doing less than or no water changes and they dont have these issues. I know that when waste is high then I have problems. Yeah, if you do water changes enough then it will help or mask the issue but Im going to say something else is the root cause.
Thats just a wild arsh guess on my part.

So back to the old question whats next?

Yeah Gill, I do agree about the flow issue. I don't think it's becaues I don't have enough. I have two Koralia 3. I don't think I need another smaller one. I think adjusting my ph's to find the right spot may be what I need to do. It's so frustrating. Well anyway. I will do doing tank maintenance today. 20% WC and siphoning out crap and adjusting my ph's. I will take some new pictures once it's all clean(ish). After talking with my LFS guy, I have decided to take out the bioballs in my wet/dry. Slowly taking them out with each WC. I have been having a high nitrate problem (higher than what I want it to be) and I have explained everything that I do and he said the bioballs are a nitrate trap and could also be helping the cyano. I had already planned on taking them out, this is just sooner than I had planned. So we shall see
OH YEAH, I got coraline growth!!!!!! Small purple circles are appearing on my rocks, they dont brush off. I was so excited. LOL, the first appeared on my ph's and now it's on the rocks. EXCITING.

and another thing, i HATE my fine substrate. Can I just lay a layer of crushed coral on top of it?
The cc will eventually sink below the fine sand....what kind do you have?
you can get aragonite....you may not like CC...some fish can't burrow in it...I read a lot of threads where people regret having it

Crushed coral can also be a nitrate trap which requires more maintenance. You lose a lot of pods when syphoning the substrate. My personal opinion, I would stay away from crushed coral although some use it successfuly and it looks good.

Good job on the coraline growth!
I would agree with the others on staying away from the CC. Why do you hate your fine substrate? Is it the Cyano? The bio balls are probably 90% of your issue I bet. Once you get rid of those then you will probably see better results. Crazy how the little things make such a big difference. Please post some pics. Its been so long I forget what the tank looks like.

I had crushed coral in my last tank and currently have agronite. I like the agronite much better! Do you have any Chaeto? I put a handful in my tank about 1 1/2 weeks ago and since then the Nitrate dropped from 15 to 5. I also have bioballs I don't think they have been a problem so far (started the tank the same time as yours). I have rinsed them a couple of times when doing a water change to try and keep them cleaner. Also we are hearing great things about Chem pure elite helping to reduce algea, we just put some in the hubbies biocube yesterday so time will tell. I will say his water was sparkling this morning!! I haven't read thru all 50 pages of your thread so maybe you have addressed all of this. Sorry if you did.

I am siphoning the substrate right now. To get the cyano off. I can't stand looking at it. NO matter how I adjust my powerheads it keeps coming back. I just don't get it.

I cannot wait to get rid of them dam* things. every spot in my tank gets some form of flow. I don't get it. I think you are right about the bioballs.

I run chemipure elite also. It's clears up the water really nicely
I am going to keep my substrate as is. I am just frustrated.
