My 90 gal build + stand build

Well things are certainly slow when waiting for the cycle to end. But good things come to those who wait. All is testing 0 and everything else seems to be good. The phosphate is still testing high. Anyone got any thoughts as to why? Its about 1.5 on my low test (instant ocean test kit). Other than that all looks really good. The LR has a lot of color. So I went to the LFS and took my to girls and let them pick out our first fish. They went right to the clowns and I didnt flinch. I love them too. The only question left was black or orange. That wasnt a question very long either. So 2 very nice Perculas are being held at the LFS waiting for us to pick them up next week. I will also be getting a toadstool for the new guest. Now back to the tank. I have prepared 120 gal of new water and plan to make that exchange tomorrow. Test all that then probably Wednesday, if we can wait that long go get the fish and coral. Of course I will get pictures up as soon as they hit the water. For now thats that.

Ok so I did a 60% water change.
I also checked the phosphates out of the RODI and as expected there were none. I will monitor the water parameters tonight and tomorrow and if all is well then its to the fish store to pick up our new guest. I will also be picking out a toadstool for the tank. Saw a pretty yellow one but was talked out of it at the store. Anyway hope to be able to post some pictures tomorrow night. Stay tuned!

Hi friend.
You have been busy on your build. I will look for your pics soon. I would like to have one of those controllers but, that is too rich for my blood.
If you have phosphates I would wonder about your LR. At least that is where I would start looking. It is possible to have LR that is leaching phosphates. Folks will cook thier rock that has this problem. I don't mean literaly cook it. It goes in a tub with a heater, powerhead, and a lid so no light can get to it. Weekly water changes and testing for the phosphates. When they reach zero you are good to go. If you can't find any other source (are you ghost feeding the tank?) then that is the only other idea I have.
No QT? I would be cautious about this move. It would be best if you were to set up a QT for your new fish. I would do the coral too. I am not going to yell at you but I am warning you. Clowns or any fish can have internial parasites that you can't see untill they rear there ugly head out of the fishes rear end. Do you know what the gravity is in the tank where your new clowns are being held? My LFS runs a pretty low gravity which helps them with externial parasites. That all changes when you get them home. Also, do you have a aclimation method and containers for your new fish?
Just some thoughts i have.

Love reading builds like this. Just wished I would have done the same setting up my 3 tanks. Keep up the good work.

Thanks, I guess you mean the logging of the build. Yeah it was a habit that I picked up when I did a modification on a computer a long time ago. Its always fun looking back.
Posiden, been a long time. The short of it is I dont have a QT. The only thing I could do is a tank in my tank but wouldnt that defeat the purpose? As far as gravity I think they run at 1.023. I did a 60% water change and let that mix over night. Checked all my parameters tonight and all is good. Phosphates very low .2 (instant ocean test kit).
I bought 3 containers from a local pet store. They were suggested as transport boxes. I thought I could use them to acclimate the fish in.
What do you use as a QT? I am going to build a new sump. Using some of melvs reefs examples. May be able to design a QT solution in that.

I am currently using a ten gallon tank with a HOB cascade 150 for the water movement. I have a Bio Cube protien skimmer in the HOB. If I need to medicate I shut off the skimmer. I am in the process of doing a 20L for my QT tank. I want to have a bit more swimming room for the new additions. Plus I want some coral racks in there. I hope to have my 75 running soon. If you try to do something in your sump, make sure it is totally sectioned off from your main system. You don't want to be mixing the water from one with the other. I am sure you know that though.
Any container is great for getting the fish ready to go in. Providing it is clean and safe. I use a glass pyrex measuring dish right now. It is all it is used for and never sees any dish water time. Since all I have is a 29 Bio Cube right now, the container is big enough for my purchases. I use a piece of air tubing with an adjustable valve on the end so I can make it just drip my tank water in. Once I have had to add a gallon to my tank, I am happy with the ammount of time and water the new guy has had to get ready. I then net them in. This site has a real nice instruction on how to do it. Just look left, to the side bar for this site. "Acclimation Flash".
I hope you get those phosphates in check. Stay on it. You might look at getting some phosphate absorbing media to help out. Good Luck.

Ok so the big day finally got here! The Clown fish are home and seem to be very happy. I took some video of them and will try to get that posted tonight. I will include a link when I do. Also got a leather toadstool and a piece of what I think is "fuzzy grass" mushroom coral. The toadstool hasn't opened back up yet but the grass is starting to peak back out. Again pics will get posted as soon as I can. For the corals I want yall to see them when they open. For now I am just happy that the fish seem happy.

WAHOOOO progress, i love adding, just make sure to leave some time inbetween, and you may want to consider QTing since you have fish in the tank already...

Thanks triggers. I will probably turn my focus to corals now. May drop another fish or two in but probably not for a while. Have to really consider what I want those last fish to be. Don't have a QT at the moment. Will have to work on that. I do have a small 8 gal that I am going to use as a QT once its set up. I went looking yesterday at some 29 gal that I might consider setting up later.
Ill try to get some pictures up today of them today. I have to say I question myself to spend so much money on fish that I am suppose to see and they choose to hide.

Hello Gill,
I just read through this whole thread and let me say very very nice! I admire your wood working skills, the stand and end tables/book shelf/electronics holders are just beautiful! Infact would you like to build me a nice stand and hood and end tables for my future salt water tank? And deliver it to me here in south west iowa? I will pay you for the supplies! lol. You surely arnt taking any shortcuts on your tank. I do have some questions how ever.
1. I noticed your lighting is just T-5 HO. Now maybe its just companies trying to make money but I thought to have corals you needed at a very minimum T-5 VHO but prefered MH lighting. Will your T-5 HO work?
2. On your lighting do you have all 4 bulbs hooked to 1 switch or do you have them each on a seperate switch.
3. I noticed that you chose to start by putting two clowns in your tank. Now maybe im wrong on this, but dont most people start with a CUC? Do you plan on adding a CUC? If so what do you want to include in your CUC?
I also have a small request. Can you please make a list of all the equipment you have bought so far, and maybe a stock list that you plan on having.
Please excuse my noobieness, i dont actually keep salt water aquariums ... YET ... I do have a 55 gallon fresh water cichlid aquarium that i hope to upgrade to saltwater when i actually have money. In all reality it wont be that tank that gets upgraded since it is 100% tempered glass and cant be drilled. But i have studied salt water aquariums for about six months and have a large plan in my head. Just need money. I do take donations

Hey thanks chevyrulzs2010, I can certainly build you a stand and table and what not but I can assure you that its not as hard as it looks and you would be much happier building it yourself. If not here is a price. $300.00 for the hood and stand. Shipping will run you another $1500.00. Will you be sending cash or will that be credit?

The lights are actually VHO. They are T-5s 54 watts being overdriven to 84 watts each. Bringing the total to 336 watts. All the overdrive happens with the icecap 660 ballast. I have 4 now and will probably add 2 more later. Some people will tell you if you want SPS then you have to have halides. Halides put off a bunch of heat. Do your studying on this and make up your mind for yourself. They are using LED now for lighting. I think with the right setup and planning you can make T-5s do it all. AIf you would like I can PM you a list of stuff I have bought with some rounded pricing that I paid. I can tell you this, don't try to go cheap. This is an expensive hobby and what I have learned in a short time is if you go cheap you will just buy it twice. Better off to buy it once!
The CUC
, they will come later. The thing that I see is in a new system that there is not nearly enough trash to support them. You don't want a hungry CUC. Its very hard to be patient in this hobby because every thing in it is so darn interesting. However, go slow and let it come together as the system allows you to. Testing will tell you what and when to do. Read a bunch and remember that everyone will have an idea on what to do and how to do it. You will need to wade through this until you decide on a path. Then go for it. The only thing I think, and I am certain there may be one more, that people agree on is take your time.

The last thing I would tell you is that this is my first tank. People here can give you a lot of support and I will certainly tell you what I can but try not to lead you to what I think.
Good Luck and let me know about the PM.

Hey thanks for the quick reply, as for the stand and stuff, i think your right i have a design in my head and think it would be better to build my self. Sorry your prices are alittle steep LOL.
As for the pm, i would like that.
I have been looking at salt water forever now, but still dont know what i officially want to do. I would like to do a nice 125 or 150, and use my 55 gallon tank as a huge sump? Maybe even divide it and have a 20 gallon QT that is completly seperate inside the same glass box? Who knows, i have come to realize that this is a expensive hobby, and that i will have to take it veryyyyyyyyyy slowlllllllllllllllyyy. I am working on some cad drawings of the tank and stand i want. Almost basing my stand off of yours.
Well this is amazing for a first tank. I do have one idea for you tho.
With all your electronics you should wire them to a central touch screen, lights, readings, temp control, flow control, tank history input, ect all to one central touch screen monitor built into your hood, then you could really feel rich. Maybe we would even see your house on cribs. Maybe a little unrealistic but still like the idea =P
But anyway love your tank.

Didn't I tell you? I have a Digital Aquatics Reefkeeper Elite hooked up to it!
And yeah, its nice.
PM is on the way. Post some pics of the CAD when you get done. I would remember 2 things when considering the height of the stand.
1. Will you be sitting or standing for the majority of the viewing of the tank.
2. The inside height of the cab needs to give you room for lights and to move a skimmer cup out. Mine turned out great but its close.

Another small win for me and a big win for the aquarium. I have not had an issue with temp but the other night my temp headed north of 80 F. I had some computer fans and a transformer. So out to the shop I went. 20 Min later I come back in victorious. I was also able to hook the fans to the Reefkeeper Elite and now it runs off the temp sensor and shuts on and off. I feel so accomplished.

Very nice.

I bet it is nice to look at something swim around in the tank. Rock just doesn't move to fast.
