I will have pics of the breeding tank up soon. Its a 30g tank filled halfway. I have 20g of RO water on hand for frequent water changes and many jars to put the young in. I also have a brine shrimp hatching system for food as well as making green water. As i said pics will be up soon and im hoping this will all work out. Bettas will be here by the end of the week! Will keep you updated. And yes, not as cool as breeding clownfish, but its a start!

Its in the bat cave.
JK its in my basement. Its unfinished but slowly geting better. You cant see it but the wall to the left of the tank is under construction. Getting plastered flat then im gonna paint it. I have alot of work to do this summer including buling two new walls to section this part of the basement off. Good thing a family friend (an electrician) agreed to do the electrial stuff for me (like adding tons of power outlets for my tanks.

Bettas should not be in tanks larger then 10 gallons as they stress out patrolling the tanks. Yes they do swim around alot but need to be with very peaceful fish that dont have large flashy tails, or that are in the same family. That means no Guppies, Gouramis, Angels, or nippy fish like larger tetras and barbs. Good choices would be cherry barbs cardinal and neon tetras. Even mollies and platies do well with them. I have a betta in my 12g with fancy goldfish and he does fine.

Back on track, My bettas arrived and are great. They even gave me an extra female wich is awsome. She is another marble but has some red specs on her. I have decided to breed her with the marbled male in the pic above first. They are in the tank and so far so good. He is flaring at her and she is bowing her head, all good signs. Now he just needs to build his nest and out she will go. Will take pics soon.

I've breed bettas before, did for quite awhile... I would lower the water abit because once the eggs are laid they tend to drop even if the nest is perfect... the lower the water the easier it is for the male to take care of the eggs and babies because they do drop from the nest and he chases them and puts them back. You prob. know but once they hatch you gotta have BBS ready because they will be hungry once their yolks are gone...

Could you also tell me what you do for lighting?
Also, could you tell me what that styrofoam cup is for?
Also, when you get the males, how are you going to separate them?
Like I said, just email me about everything.

Thanks again

For lighting im not really doing anything. To seperate the males, when they fry start to fight you just net them and put them in seperate jars. The females for the most part dont fight. The cup allows the male to build a bubble nest more securly and still allows you to see the nest. every thing else should be in the email.

I was under the general idea that the betta was the mean fish. I have a betta in with gouramis and tetras. And was worried about them. not the beta

no, they are very peaceful fish, only agressive to their own kind and things with flashy or long tails. i would be carefull with the gouramis, same family as the betta

I recommend lighting and some sort of lid... the class lid works great. If theres no lid then the bubble nest can be disturbed even if its under the cup. The less disturbance the less work for the male betta...

ok, will buy a lid. This is my first time breeding so im wondering how long will it be before my betta starts making the bubble nest? My female is already showing the vertical bars and tilting her head down. He flares at her non stop.
