i had/have the same problem. i hate that film too it looks like crap. i am not sure exactly why it happens but a guy at my LFS instructed me to put a bag of carbon on top of my sponge filter. it worked really well but make sure you change the carbon every 2 weeks...i do mine every week...or it will leach bad things into your tank. make sure the water flows through the carbon and not just over and to the sides of the bag or it will do nothing. this worked for me within a day.
i got the carbon a couple days ago and added it when i did a wc. the junk has not come back yet so i think the carbon is working=)

Thanks. That's nice of you to say. I'll sell them to you if you want. I always keep projects going. I also buy and build fuges for all my tanks. It's fun. :)
I'm in the middle of restoring my 30 year old 17g tank and buying a 34g Solana.
But I,m not addicted, Not Addicted, NOT ADDICTED. lol :)

do you design all your fuges the same way? do have diagrams you could show us?? id love to see your setup...inflow, outflow, skimmimg, bioballs, LS, LR, chaeto, scrubber, etc. i am really interested in someday being able to do this when i have the space. id also love to have a refugium that looks like a display tank with some inverts, a fish or two, and a frag rack...any suggestions??
oh n i have always wondered what is the difference between a sump and a refugium?
