"......make sure you run a lit fuge as a dark fuge doesn't do a whole lot lol. "
Actually not a bad way to go. Search out ctyptic zone refugium. Not something many do though. Kind of cool thing with all of the sponge and what not.

with a cryptic fuge, how would the plants undergo photosynthesis without light? I know it'd work as a pod breeding ground, but if the plants ended up dying... that's die off in the tank..

hey guys, just got back from the FISH STORE/OFFICE.. heres what i did.. i figured since i have it.. why not just keep it till its time 2 throw them out and instead of replacing it... ill just keep them out for good.
Chamber 1- I ended up keeping the sponge, guy at the fish store said really a matter of preference, some say filter floss over sponge and vise versa.. he says you really wont have a problem with either, so again figured eh, since i already have it, ill just keep it.
So Chamber has ceramic rings + sponge on top of it....
Chamber 2 has Chemipure(just added that today) ... on top of that is my carbon.. on top of that are bio balls
Chamber 3 has powerhead/heater/bioballs.
Should be fine with all that in there right? Nothing really to lose. I figured since i already had the ceramic rings/bioballs/carbon i might as well keep it in there.
Since i had never thrown in a shrimp or anything as well, the LFS told me to throw some food in there at least to raise ammonia and feed the bacteria. He gave me a cube of Brine shrimp/Some crystal looking thing which i had no idea what it was/and some shell looking thing with something in it and said throw this all in there so i did.
I ran a quick water test as well too and was in a rush cuz my friends were downstairs waiting for me to go out and i think i may have done 1 drop +/- on my nitrate.. but this is what my latest test looked like.... I need to redo it, but ill do it in 2-3 days when my karolia comes in...
PH was in between 8.0 and 8.2.. so ill say 8.1 ..
Temp. 78 degrees
Nitrate looked like itwas about 5.0
Nitrite - 0
Amonia - 0
lets see how my test will look in about 2-3 days when i test her up again after all that food in there + chemipure.

No algae, mostly sponge and other no to low light filtering critters. Think about where the most sponge is in your tank. If you pull out a rock there is more sponge on the bottom of the rock where no light reaches. Cryptic zones are cool but again not many people set one up. It is also called an Environmental Gradient.
" The Environmental Gradient is the name for a completely natural method of captive reef tank filtration. Primary filtration of dissolved organics and pelagic bacteria within this new filtration method is performed by living sponges and sea squirts. Berlin style reef aquaria utilize a protein skimmer to remove dissolved organics, but lack any natural method to control pelagic bacterial densities. The use of living sponges and sea squirts presents a much more natural method to maintain captive reef aquaria. Additional advantages of this new method are its low operational costs combined with the inherent ability to maintain a more diverse assemblage of macro organisms. "
I'm gonna start another thread in Advances In the Hobby section with some quotes from articles on it.

Like this? If so Hydroid medusa, will go away usually.

Or maybe like this. Asterina, usually not a problem unless they become a plague.

Just make sure you keep mag, calcium, and alk high and the coralline will take off provided you already have some in the system to seed the other rock.

sounds good!.. any1 have any input on the lighting.. reason im asking is becuase the LFS said that if i try to GROW coral, it would probabaly take at least 5 months to double its size cuz my lights are so weak.. that sucksss

i believe you can upgrade your lights, i'll PM you a link in a min. Be careful of heating issues though...
