ok after looking at alot skimmers and "footprints" today i can take out the divider that separates the skimmer and refuge and would have all the room i would need
how important is the refuge all i have in it is some sand and rock, no light.

Refugiums are a great asset to any system. And in all honesty you could easily just move the divider/baffle that seperates the two down a little bit untill you have the room for the footprint that you need and still keep a refugium...just a little smaller is all. That's what I would do if faced with your choice.

I have the XP2000 and been running it for about 8months. I would give it a satisfactory rating. The tank is a 144g with a medium load. From what I have read look first at the bubble kings and work you way down from there. External skimmer Im told work better.

You said you would give it just a satisfactory rating...If you were to purchase another skimmer would you go with the xp or would you go for something different?

For the money it is a good skimmer. Next time I will look for a used bubble king mini. Its like everything else, how much do you want to spend and how much room you have. The skimmer meowzer is running is supposed to be good as well. I also might be expecting to much and have not owed anything else to really compare it too. I talked to RS and for the money I wanted to spend at the time he recommended the xp2000.

ok i am thanking of an external skimmer, if that is what i go with it will have to go on the outside of the stand and about 18" off the floor to work in my system.
so the hard part, the WIFE, talking her into putting on the side of the stand. she is home now so here we go wish me luck.

Bubble King your paying alot for the name!!!!! Yes they are good, but pound for pound the octopus is and ideal choice. I've seen owners of bubble kings swap out for something other.... So that said.

So you have NO room under your tank.....
i have the room but have a glass sump and can not drill it for the return. just got of the phone with a supply house and the return on the external skimmer needs to go out then down it can not go out and up will not work. he also said that the xp-2000 cone is under raited so that is what i went with. IT IS ON THE WAY

wow got an order confirmation 3:11CDT and a shipping confirmation at 3:14CDT

So you got the internal then? I think it's a good choice...I would wait till it shows up and then see if you have to move the baffle in the sump or not. Is it a glass or acrylic sump? Also when you do get it I would greatly apreciate it if you can give me an accurate measurement on the footprint because I've read different things on different sites and they all say something a little bit different. It would really help me out when it comes time to re-do my sump before I order it.

We had space issues in our sump for the 100 gal, and ended up using an Eshopps S-150 cone skimmer, and it is easily the best skimmer I've used to date, even over our ER RC-180. Eshopps makes a larger cone skimmer, but I'm not sure of the footprint, but it's definitely worth a look.

As for ASM skimmers...I wasn't impressed. In fact, we had a Mini-G that I ended up tossing into the trash.
