HMMMMM...I must have missed that section
I really want to buy one but I just don't want to take a chance on getting a loud pump. I have a MSX300A with the Askoll/laguna pump and it is so quiet. I did however pay a lot more then $400 that a XP-2000 would run me. If this new tank had a remote sump I would buy one for sure. The SRO line looks impressive and at a great price.
So I was one of the early adopters and my pump was crazy loud. I worked with Coralvue and they sorted me out with a replacement pump. Now I have the xp2000 pulling tons of junk out of my tank and it is super quiet. Coralvue stand behind their products and if they say "super silent" they will work with you to make sure you get "super silent". It was a bit of a road to get to but now that I'm here I am one happy customer.
Go for it. I am not sure of the cause of the loud vs. quiet but Coralvue will stand behind the pumps and when they are silent they are silent.

I picked up a new xp2000 yesterday and the pump rumbles and the whole skimmer shudders every 10 seconds or so. The bubbles fluctuate a bit when this happens. It makes great foam but is noisy and annoying. I took apart the pump and there is a wear pattern on the inside where the impeller fits and the impeller is also scored. I also noticed that there is some corroision (looks like rust) on the metal screw holes. Did I get a used pump? !!!! I have call into coralvue but this kinda sucks for $400.

In 6" of water my gate valve outlet is underwater. Maybe something has changed or my communication skills are lacking.
no i thank you are ok it may be me, there is a pipe that has a valve that is controlled on the top, the water comes out under that, the outlet
of the valve is about 1/4 above the water line, i may have said 3/4? so there is about 1/4 of the pipe out of the water

As long as the water is making a loud splashing noise it is probably correct>LOL The way to fix that noise is to put a 90 elbow (pvc) on the return. This will force the return underwater. You will also need to drill a hole on the top of the elbow.

In 6" of water the return pipe is underwater correct. This will cause back pressure and the skimmer will overflow with water or skim wet. If you want to run it that deep I would suggest keeping the flow valve open wide and watching it. Or you can extend the output pipe to get it above water. There is a break in period so the operations of the skimmer will continue to change and need to be adjusted. Oh and the pumps are known for having problems starting and making ungoddly noise. This is well document in the octopus skimmer club thread on the "other" site.
Agree the pipe submerged would cause back pressure.....Any skimmer it would for that fact, but as you stated well documented on the other site.....I know they did have issues with noisey/odd wear on pumps.....I don't know if they could ever really isolate as to why or a batch or what could they?

ok i may have got it now, what i did was unplug the skimmer and the two return pumps. pulled the water out of the D/T, put the water back into the sump till it was full, pluged the smaller of the two return pumps(mag5) back in and let the D/T fill and got the sump back on the move, then pluged the larger of the return pumps(mag9.5) back in and got the sump back to the proper level and last pluged the skimmer back in and all is good so far
