A drinking water RO unit has an in-line carbon filter as the post filter to remove any abnormal tastes or odors. It normally comes with a pressurized storage tank and a RO faucet. They reduce the TDS down low enough for safe drinking water levels, but are not completely free of TDS. fish tank only are RODI systems and provide 0 TDS water reading. and do not come with any tanks or faucet. but i guess its all the same, it's much better then tap water ;p

I think you'll find most reef hobbyists use an RO/DI filter. Reef salts/crystals come with minerals already in the mix to help maintain specific levels so people don't tend to want the extra stuff in the water already.. The DI removes minerals in tap water so you can mix your water up specifically to your tanks needs.

I have this unit
Typhoon III
5 Stage 75 or 100 GPD RO/DI unit with high rejection, Automatic shut off valve and quick connect PUSH-IN fittings
I bought an extra fitting and have it connected to a food grade hose on my back lani. I has a valve that I can turn off the DI filter and just get RO water for drinking. I had no place inside to hook it up and it was very easy to just connect it to the hose outside.

the typhoon 111 is around 190.00 but they also have a typhoon 5 stage that is about 150.00. I will tell you it was the best investment I ever made. No more lugging water. I just set it up so I could put a 35 gal bute trash can next to it. I keep it full for top offs and when I need to make water for changes, I just syphone it to my water mixing can. I keep a pump in my top off water all the time. Never have to worry about being out of water.

I don't have an RO/DI unit...mine is just Reverse Osmoses, I have no idea what the filters do, I just know there are 5 of them....the more filtration the purer the water. It's the same unit in Walmart, the holding tank under my sink is smaller. I know mine was intended as drinking water. I don't understand why any water purifier would be labeled not fit for drinking water and expect me to put it in my fish tank, but not drink the water or use it for coffee or cooking...that's just dumb advertisement.....I wouldn't buy it.
I do remember the news making a big todo about the bottled water not having anything usful in it, that we need the bacteria. What is not taken into consideration is that we eat yogurt, and nice green veggies...we get what we need elsewhere to stay healthy. I prefer my RO water to the crap my well dishes out.

Some places like labs and factories need completely purified water for mixing chemicals and stuff, medicines..etc. In our case the fish don't actually drink the water and besides that we are replacing those minerals and salts that have been removed with the ones in our salt mixes to the levels that our tanks require. I wouldn't buy a unit either without the option of bypassing or removing the DI stage of the filter.
