He's a Jenday conure, actually -- very similar, easy to confuse. And yes, he can be VERY loud. On rare occasions he gets into these "mean moods," where he will try and bite, but they're usually based on some outside stimulus that he's not happy with. Ordinarily he's very affectionate, loves being on my shoulder, and he enjoys clucking at me. I usually keep his cage open from the time I get home to about 9pm. His wings aren't clipped so he flies around while we're home. He usually only screams (and I mean SCREAMS) when he's been cooped up and we're home but ignoring him. He and the cat have an uneasy truce between the two of them: she doesn't swat at him, and he doesn't try to bite her tail. Obviously we watch carefully when the two are running free in the same room....just in case.

Once again, the credit has to go to the awesome seahorse momma who raised two of the three buggers in this pic (the other horse was being a prissy girl who didn't want to be photographed).
Yep. I'm looking at YOU, T. Thanks again!

lol, I was just going to ask if the big boy had decided not to be so shy. They look great, and I know they are well taken care of.

He's coming out of his shell a little. He's staked out the area under the Kenya coral as his personal territory, and he rarely leaves that spot. On occasion he goes to find the food dish on his own, but more often than not I still have to lead him to it.
Every few days I just dump the food and let them "hunt." They all seem to like that...

"I see the food, but there's a force field!!"

Force Field is gone. Feeding frenzy ensues....

Food is always better when shared....

I'm glad you said just in case...I read someplace that a cats saliva contains a bacteria that's toxic, and most cases fatal to birds unless you have appropriate antibiotics on hand. I had to laugh when you said he rides on your shoulders. A book I was reading said that was why pirates have eye patches. My Amazon does not ride my shoulder, but he is a bit bigger than a Jenday.
I just love that sea shell you use as a feeding dish. It has those edges as little hitches too...the pictures are great.

The cat bacteria thing wouldn't surprise me in the least. Ever get a cat bite? If you don't clean it with peroxide or alcohol quickly, you definitely get a localized infection. Don't know about the bird thing, but there was a whole mythbuster episode once about why perfectly-sighted pirates often wore eyepatches anyway!
Another weekend, another water change. My parameters (pre-water change) are:
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 30*
Ca: 480
Mg: 1280
Dkh: 10**
pH: 8.0
Temp: 71
*Can't seem to bring this down yet. I'm sure this has to do with the addition of such an extra bioload, but I wish I could at least get it under 20 as the "high point." I may need to start doing 10g water changes weekly for a few months.
**Weird. I'm used to my dKh being 11 or 12. Last night it was barely 10...more like 9.5 if I was to guess. Does anyone know if dKh varies on a daily/nightly schedule like pH does? I'm testing this again after the water change to see if I need to buffer, but I don't like doing that. Might be why my pH was a tad low, also (I'm used to seeing that at 8.2).
Oh yes, I was bad. I bought a new Chalice frag yesterday while I was at the store. On second though, no -- I was good.
I did not buy the adorable, brightly colored, and-they-never-frelling-HAVE-them Chevron tang that was there!! I could keep in him in a QT tank for two months...couldn't I???

Do you have hopes of raising babies?

Nope. And for some reason, wife and I are tiffing over the future 110/65/whatever size reef tank, so I'm going to be a good husband and keep my hole shut about new tanks for a bit. She likes the hobby, but we all know how expensive - and addicting - it can be. I'm definitely the fish freak of the family.
I do have some backup plans in mind if it becomes necessary. It just won't be me doing the rearing.

BIG SIGH....me either...I hate to see the little doomed babies, I have a mesh bag I put over my hose from the overflow to catch the little doomed critters and I clean the sock after they all die. Seeing them in the DT holding on to some tiny thing only they can see, then their strength wears out and they get sucked in...it breaks my heart...I go watch TV until it's over.
Nova, if you can find an way to earn extra money and call it fish madness cash, you can do anything you like and not take money from the household. A friend of mine loved Harley moter cycles, and wanted a new one. He worked on the railroad and made a good living already, but that money was for the family and the house... so he did the Mr Fix-it guy thing and got the fancy bike he wanted (cost over $18,000.00) and the wife let things be.

LOL The cash flow is fine, right now I think it's just the notion of seeing a tank in every room that's wearing on her. And I can understand that feeling on some level. I get the same mild irritation when I see SHOES in every room of the house.
Besides, we're FINALLY starting to think about starting a family. Money is going to disappear very shortly when that comes to pass!

Wow. Got the weekend water change done on Friday evening...that's unusual. Probably a good thing, considering the movers and the storage pod are due to be here any minute, and I'm supposed to be laying a wood floor tomorrow......so this weekend is shaping up to be pretty busy!
The shell that has been a constant source of irritation (keeps falling) may have finally been fixed. The drawback -- I won't be able to remove it for cleaning anymore. It's a small price to pay if it means the durned thing won't fall and take out 3 corals on its way down any more!
I didn't test chemistry last night before the WC, but I'm curious to see what a 30% WC will do to the nitrate levels after a few weeks.

Thanks, Louis. The moving help is gone, the pod is empty...and now my house is full of crap. I think a major fall cleaning is in order here. I've lived for 6+ months without even MISSING a lot of this stuff, so that in my mind is pretty strong evidence that I don't NEED it. As we were unpacking the pod, I asked myself more than once, "Why the hell did I pack THIS?!" A lot has already gone to the trash can. I even gave the movers an overstuffed chair, ottoman, and old style tube TV that I didn't even want brought into the house.
I don't want clutter.
As I look around I have to admit: even though there are a lot of things that I've missed....I've learned to live with less. I have a tendency to surround myself with things that make me comfortable, but when the Things start to take over the living space, I can definitely say there is a problem.
So, we have a New Plan. No floor-laying for me tomorrow -- or probably at all this week. Tonight and tomorrow are devoted to Going Through and Throwing Away. And yes, that process deserves the capital letters.
What does this have to do with my seahorse tank? Absolutely nothing. Does it belong in this journal. Nah....but it's my journal, so there. Stick THAT in your aquarium and filter it.
