When that wasn't on the lable of this second brand, I got a bit nervous...plus...I think it is old mysis and the pieces were much bigger...neither of my horses went for it.
My HB shot down to Madison to pick up some of the mysis that I'm used to feeding...boy, did he deliver!! The shrimp size is perfect and very fresh. He also picked up a small bottle of garlic extreme. I've given my horses garlic laced foods from day one...but this stuff is extreme!! They LOVE it!! My horses are eating great and enjoying!!

Wow, that was very sweet of him! After all the years of keeping fish it wasn't until I started salt water that I really began looking to see what exactly was in the food I was feeding. Many, many fish foods have no nutritional value and are mostly stuffed with "fillers" and colors...kind of like finding you children Mc D's day in and day out and wondering why they're not healthy.
Fish, like kids, get all excited when they know their favorite dinner is almost ready. It's very gratifying to see them happy and healthy.

I got up this morning and found both of my horses (yeah, both of them) on the sand...neither would eat breakfast. I tried spot feeding, some tough love, etc...I've checked the water parameters twice...
ammonia 0
nitrites 0
nitrates 0
pH 8.2
SG 1.025-6
I was convinced that both were gone, and when I went in to "dispose of them", I reached in to retrieve Apache and he scooted away, same with Navajo. On careful inspection, both are breathing normally, their skin (as far as I can tell) looks fine. Their eyes looks bright, but "confused and worried".
I tried upping the temperature very slowly, and at this point I put in one of the mini jets to see if flow is the problem.
Going over what I did yesterday in that tank. I had to replace yet another filter (the old one was not working at all), but I went with a smaller of the same brand. I did a water change 5 gallons. and I added a new fake plant. I never...NEVER have chemicals around my tanks, so I don't believe that that could be the culprit.
Please...PLEASE...I've been in tears all day long off and on...I feel so useless. Also, I got on the big horsie site and found that this as happened to someone else's kuda 6/25/07...no response...

I just got home after being gone for a couple of days...my daughter has been tending to my pets, and she did a GREAT JOB!! She kept me updated and asked questions via cell phone the whole time. She followed up with what I asked her to do every step of the way. Today, Apache and Navajo have been out and about the tank like crazy, hunting, and finally eating at breakfast and supper time.
Many, MANY thanks to those who helped me in this situation...I'm VERY greatful. More pics of Apache and Navajo in a couple of days. We'll see if there might indeed be a little brood on the say **fingers crossed **

I couldn't wait to post a picture of Apache and Navajo. These are under the blues so the quality isn't that great, but OMG...I can't believe how well they're doing now. Since I've gotten home, Navajo has been out and hunting (as her usual). When it came to bedtime, she sought out Apache and has hitched with him in the same area. Apache's hitched to the back of the rock...a little harder to see, but he's there.

We (me, Mike, Tyler, Beth, and Jonah) just got back from a road trip to the Shedd aquarium in Chicago. We took the train down out of Milwaukee...very fun day.
When I came home, I fed Apache and Navajo, and both ate great. I'm so relieved with how they've come around. Navajo looks a little bit skinnier after the ordeal, but she's eating great and will soon have her "womanly" figure back in no time.
I get to spend some quality time with them during the next 2 days, which I'm really looking forward to.

I've been rethinking and reevaluating what I've been doing with my horses as far as feeding and regular mainenance goes.
Instead of doing one big 5gal change per week, I'll be doing a 3gal change on Wednesday and another 2gal change on Saturdays...that should work with keeping their water at an even keel.
Another thing that I've done is to begin turning off all filtering during feeding time. I'm really surprised how fast they've recognized (the lack of filtering noise) that this means food, and they both motate to the front of the tank to eat. After about 10 minutes after feeding, I turn the filtration back on again, which in turn churns up a piece or 2 of mysis for them to hunt. I can't believe how this method has cut down the amount of mysis that I feed the tank...and I know that my horses have eaten, and eaten very WELL!!

I've got a plan formulating where I feed my tank with the tank lights off, and use one of my dive lights to locate the bristles and pick them out with tweezers or something.
Is something like this necessary, or am I worrying over nothing?
HELP!!

Lisa, yes they can snick the worms and it will injure them and they can die. I know someone that lost his fav breeder that way. the brissles get cought in thier mouths. You might try dipping your rock, in water that is 1.040 (if mo corals on them) thats what he did to get rid of them.
Have you tried PE mysis. They are full of yummys.
Also, have you tried a feeding dish. I have seen several designs, from hang on tank to the kind i used. A large clam shell, to a shallow glass dish.
One more thing after reading thru you thread again. Have you tried converting a hob filter for your micros. I have seen a few threads on converting them in to a refuge. you could add a palm light (15 bucks) and have a nice place for your pods to hang out.

I'm looking forward to meeting your family and having your family meet my fishy friends. Any idea when you'll be here?? Are you planning on staying in town, or...what?

I'm SO PLEASED with how well Apache and Navajo are doing!! I think I've FINALLY got a handle on this feeding thing. I don't have a regular feeding dish for them, but I do have an area in the front of the tank that makes for a natural area for them to eat. When I turn the filtration off, both horses recognize that as feeding time and make their way to this little area. The food very slowly makes its way down to them, and they can snick their little hearts out. I'm feeding considerably less this way, and I get to watch them more as they eat...they really eat a lot at one sitting.
