hey friends,
ive recently got into salt water fish about a year or 2 ago i have a 55 gallon tank with 100 lb's of live premieum fiji rock..i also have florida keys sand about 45 lb's and its about 2.5 inches across the aquarium floor... i have 2 filters 1 ehim a decent one and one marineland filter also a decent one both are working nicely the water is crystal clear.I also have 2 48in bulbs with a clear glass top one is atonic (or blue) at 65 watts ...my problem is 2 weeks ago i bought about 6 fish for my tank...a yellow tang 3-5 in a blue hippo tang 3-5 in and 3 false percula aquacultered clown fish 1 inch ....the blue hippo tang was getting stuck in the rocks and so was the yellow tang they soon died and the 3 clown fish lived about a week...in that time i introduced about 10 dif. kind of corals and 5 dif anemones they all slowly died as well basically my tank crashed and i belive i added to many different things in a 2 weeks span...heres my problom now...the tank has bean cyclying several times since the last coral passed...maybe 3 or 4 times i did water changes 3 times this week about 25-35 percent at a time...i cant get all the paramaters on...the salinity is fine 1.021,the ph is fine 8.2 the temp is fine 78 deg. and the nitrate is fine at 20 mg, heres my huge problem i cant seem to fix my ammonia its sky rocketed way too high its like double the highest level not even close to 0 and the nitrite is also way to high...how to i bring down the ammonia and nitrite ? i did 3 water cycles this week and each time put in the cycle liquid for water changes and the ammonia and nitrites remain overwhelimingly high... PLEASE HELP!!!...I LOST OVER $1800 IN FISH INVERTS AND CORAL. any help would be great and i appreciate everyones help.

ok....you're other two posts made me think you were just doing research.
now this post is making me think you're either a troll or seriously under-educated about the hobby. IF its the first, thanks for wasting my time. if the second... here we go:
the reason everything died is because you are doing a lot of wrong things. 1.021 is way too low for inverts or corals. the water needs to be at 1.026.
ANY nitrates is detrimental for corals/anenomes
you added too many fish at once, especially adding tangs which are huge poopers. your biofiltration couldnt handle the insane bioload you put on it.
you should only have ONE anenome in your tank. and if you have the right lights for them.
stop doing water changes, let the bacteria eat the ammonia and nitrites and get your nitrates down to zero or as close to as possible. if the ammonia gets over 1 then do a water change of about 20%. if it spiked too high then you may have actually killed off all the bacteria that breaks down the nitrites and you may have to go get a new live rock to start the cycle over. you are getting high ammonia because you are probably having constant die off in your rock.

it's no problem, but your first sentence is that you got into the hobby 2 years ago...did you mean months?

ive bean doing fresh water fish on and off for 8 years and 2 years ago i started with salt water fish i had aggresive fish triggers puffers etc..they all lived nicely with very little maintence for over a year....then i decided time to be peaceful so why not get a reef tank with lots of beutiful coral... and peaceful fish ...i guess i overloaded the tank and it crashed but now my main pron is the amonia is way too high and the nitrites are way too high otherwise the nitrate is perfect and the salt as mentioned needs to be a bit higher and the temp is ok and the ph is perfect so yes 2 years just 1 mon th in the croal reff and peaceful fish setup im sorry guys im being honest if u guys can help me out you'd save me a bumdle i already lost $1000 in fish i baought in the store prob buying too many at once and im invested with the croal reef tank about $1800 thanks for all the contiued support.

honestly, i'm more upset about the loss of life ou caused, not your wallet. but, we really need to stick with one thread. you're starting WAY too many threads and asking the same questions in each thread, and confusing the whole lot of us.
lets pick one and continue with that thread? or maybe use this one?

about the lights thyre pretty good they cost $175 and the guy in the store claims...thyre one step under metal halide lighting the tank is only maybe 15 in deep andthe lighting has opened up bubble pearl corals and ginoporas and its good enough for leather and etc...maybe they died because of the light though i dunno.. i think i added about 20 things in 1 week and it crashed...but ill start slowly this time can u recommend 2 starting fish..?

OK - let's slow down abit, shall we ?
#1 - Tangs DO NOT do well in 55G tanks !! They need at least 125G or larger due to their swimming nature.
#2 - Adding 3 clownfish is a no-no. Once a dominant pair has established, they will kill the odd fish out. Only a single pair to a tank.
#3 - I'm going on a limb here. You say your tangs got stuck in the rocks. Did any of your LR collapse and trapped them ? Are your LR secured well ?
#4 - You have too many anemones in your tank. They will attack each other and some anemones will kill corals. Anemones are not recommended for beginners - but that's just my opinion.
#5 - The most important thing you need to do is read and research everything you need to know about saltwater aquaria keeping. SW is much more delicate than freshwater. Don't rush into this. Consider this an expensive learning experience after all that's happened to your first SW tank. Slow down and read and research first ! Do not add too many fish and corals at the same time.

whats ur view on the small blue hippo tang ?
thanks a lot'

Ok well water changes and time will bring your ammonia down, I seriously think u need to do time to read up on saltwater before u add anything else.
IMO u have to much rock. In my 55 I have about 65lbs or LR and that is plenty. Maybe id go 75lbs at the most. If u have to much rock and its not stable fish could be getting stuck.
Stay away from anenomes.
Add coral and fish slowly.
No tangs of any kind in a 55g IMO.

saltwater.com reports....
Size: 1-2 inches
Care Level: Moderate
Temperament: Peaceful
Diet: Pellet, Flake, Greens
Origin: Indian Ocean
Acclimation Time: 3+ hours
Minimum Tank Size: 40 gallons
Coral Safe: Yes
Invertebrate Safe: Yes
not to question u but is that accurate ??? can any tangs live in a 55 gal tank ?
thanks

When they are 1-2 inches they will fit in a 55 gallon yes, but most people buy them saying they are going to upgrade and never do, all tangs are active open water swimmers that need as much space as possible, go rent any reef documentary and watch the tangs swimming around and then try to justify putting one in a 55 gallon. They also get stressed very easily and often are carrying ich so they must be quarantined and treated. In a 55 gallon you should stick to fish that stay under four or five inches at full growth, if you want bigger fish get a bigger tank.

pfft, Nathan, I believe your a troll. Don't go killing anymore innocent fish and anemone's until you have researched it.
Another thing, I keep tangs in 55gallon aquariums with NO PROBLEMS. I've been in this business for a long time, and I have never had any adverse effects. Thankyou.

Nathan, everyone has questions like these and thats normal when you first get started but I suggest going to about.com and taking their Salwateraquariums101 course given by Stan and Debbie Hauter. It really helped me a lot, then after you know the basics come back and ask all these great people all the questions you want! (THEY ARE GREAT TO HELP) but don't make them do the research for you! If you don't want to do the work post ONE thread that says HELP NATHAN.
