start bumping up the pH and alk with 2 part so that the pH stays 8.3 and the alk is 12dKH.. I've found that keeping the alk less than 12dKH with 2part makes keeping the pH stable nearly impossible.

Whats 2 part?
calcium solution + alk solution which keeps calcium, pH, and alk all stable... and magnesium unless the tank is really using mag.
like B-ionic part A and B or Kent Marine Tech CB A and B.

You just add it at the start and thats it?
well you have to add it to the tank weekly or daily depending on how much the system uses each... obviously with more stony corals, the usage will be higher and you'll have to dose more often... google the calculators, there's a few out there for how much two part to add and how often.
Some people get by with just doing frequent water changes, but when you start getting alot of corals in a tank or having issues keeping the pH stable, this is not enough.
i like your rock work Cal, its sweet! i saw a frogfish at the LFS yesterday and i said to myself, "if Cal were here, he would want you!" best of luck with your cycle.
Test tomorrow and see if the nitrates have dropped... wait for algae to start growing on the rocks i.e. "come to life" lol... then add a cuc. Did you get the diatom bloom on the sandbed yet?
