Georgia, an applicant to NATO, and an ally with the USA with troops currently serving alongside our troops here in Iraq, was invaded today by Soviet tanks.
How should the USA respond?

With a statement for the cessation of the violence. Emergency meeting of the UN security council. Nothing more until asked by Georgia or the UN.

From the blurb I heard on this early today Georgia started this. If you are going to poke the tiger with a stick you'd better make sure the cage door is locked. I don't think we need to do anything at this point except make sure our citizens can get out.

I feel so proud when I see our military overseas evacuating our citizens in any place in the world they see the need to.. You see all of our Military, Guns, Vehicles and coordination called into play and Im sure the people must be so ecstatic to see them and know that everything is going to be OK and that they are safe. I dont know if ANYBODY saw that program Anthony Bourdain's NO RESERVATIONS when they had to be evacuated from Lebanon when he was filming a show there and Syria tried to invade. It was a real feel good show!

I agree, if they are protecting OUR citizens. It really bothers me when we spend billions of dollars involved in other countries disputes when they don't even want us there.

Heres some info on this mess
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080808/...uth_ossetia_32
DZHAVA, Georgia - Russia sent columns of tanks and reportedly bombed Georgian air bases Friday after Georgia launched a major military offensive Friday to retake the breakaway province of South Ossetia, threatening to ignite a broader conflict.
Hundreds of civilians were reported dead in the worst outbreak of hostilities since the province won defacto independence in a war against Georgia that ended in 1992. Witnesses said the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali was devastated.
"I saw bodies lying on the streets, around ruined buildings, in cars," said Lyudmila Ostayeva, 50, who had fled with her family to Dzhava, a village near the border with Russia. "It's impossible to count them now. There is hardly a single building left undamaged."
The fighting broke out as much of the world's attention was focused on the start of the Olympic Games and many leaders, including Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and President Bush, were in Beijing.
The timing suggests Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili may have been counting on surprise to fulfill his longtime pledge to wrest back control of South Ossetia — a key to his hold on power.
Saakashvili agreed the timing was not coincidental, but accused Russia of being the aggressor. "Most decision makers have gone for the holidays," he said in an interview with CNN. "Brilliant moment to attack a small country."

Seems like Russia is in the right here. South Ossetia is trying to breakaway from Georgia (for whatever reason) and into Russian control, and seemed like that might have happened. Then Georgia fired the first shots to try and retake South Ossetia, now occupied by Russia, and Russia retaliated. Notice how the citizens ran into Russia and not their 'home country.'
I'm curious as to why they want to be out of Georgia so bad?
