Hi Seth... the tank looks good! I could barely tell that it was barebottom with the paint.... I especially love the halimeda. For your cold, take some vitamin-c. Especially asboric acid based. If there are bead like/looking things in a capsule, take the beads out (just open the capsule), and swallow them because the capsule is just un needed gelatin and food coloring.... good luck moving into a house instead of an apartment!

Thanks guys.
I am actually loving a barebottom tank it's all so clean and easy to manage. And I can have as much flow as I want without worrying about stirring up the sandbed. Lol.
I guess I'll save up for a glass hole cutter and two bulkheads some new lights and a magnesium test kit on my next dry goods order.
Cant wait to get some corals!!!!! And I really do think that montipora will survive and thrive. Showing signs of improvement even this morning.

Livin life man. Lol. Work, ... Took my wife out to see that new movie "joyful noise" this evening.
The tank is doing well. I'm saving a little money here and there for coral. Just going to take a little. It. I'm also saving up for new bulbs for my t5 unit.
That montipora is steadily getting more and more polyps back. Looking better every day. I hope it will color up really well in the next couple of months. I'm looking at different SPS corals that I like. Just a matter of time. Lol.

That will be a beautiful monti cap once it's healed. The only thing I have heard about monti's is that they take calcium away from the sps. And since you want a sps dominated tank, it is something to think about. Oh, don't forget to add a setosa. That coral is the brightest orange!!

A monti is an SPS coral and all SPS compete for calcium and alkalinity,... Some are just quick growers and use more. As long as adequate levels of each are maintained, there should be no problems.
Im actually really interested in getting a purple montipora capricornis as well.

Not really. I am on a pretty strict budget for aquarium stuff. I know it seems like I buy something here and there all the time for it - but I have to work hard for all the extra money and pull odd jobs here and there whenever possible. I can't wait until I can get a college degree. Maybe then I will have a crack at real gainful employment. Right now I'm just glad to be scraping by. Plus, if you can, pray for my family. The parish school system has a hiring freeze for all new teachers and it's going to last this entire next year. So, basically, when my wife graduates, there will be no jobs available. Which means I have the toughest Summer imaginable coming up if I can't find another job soon. Especially with a new born daughter. On top of that, my dad bought something for me that I didn't ask for and said that I owed him $40 out of my next paycheck. Bullsh!t, isn't it???!?!???
ANYWAYS, enough of my ranting for the day...
I am looking at a few different websites that have some really awesome aquacultured SPS corals in a $20 and under and a $15 and under part on the sites. Really good deals, but the sizes of the frags are 1" and under. It's going to take months for them to get used to the tank and then months for them to start growing. By then, I hope to be moved out of this apartment and into something betterbigger than 400 square feet. But, with this dang hiring freeze, it looks like our plans will change. And here I go on the rant again... lol

You're in good company, though, Seth. I know it doesn't make the situation any better, but a lot of people are in the same boat. At least you can find solace is knowing that it's not your fault, you know? Hell, I'm a male nursing graduate and when I started school there were jobs waiting for us; not so much any more.
I prefer to put frags into my tank as opposed to larger colonies. It lets them grow however they want with the conditions provided, and SPS grow so fast that in a few months a 1" frag can turn into a mini colony.
Chin up brother. If you can keep your glass half full everyday I believe things will change sooner than you think.

Thanks Eric and Justin. I appreciate the kind words.
Ill have to do something! It will be ok though. My in laws have it in thick with a couple private schools. Even though the parish school system might be closed for new hires, I sure she will be able to find gainful employment in the private sector.
Right now that montipora cap is steadily recovering. Places that didn't have tissue are now being covered again and it's combatting some of the algae that grew on its skeleton. I really want to purchase some more SPS corals in the next couple of weeks. However, my t5 bulbs seem to be dim for a few minutes when they turn on at first and the daylights are definitely yellowing. So I'm Gona have to replace them as well. I found a great frag site and thinking about ordering some since I made a little extra this week. I might order some lights with it too.
Besides that, nothing else is new. My fish are growing. My shrimp molted a little while back. My halimeda algae is dying off here and there. I'm thinking of doing a water change this weekend to suck up some detritus off the bottom of the tank.
You know, you don't really realize how much fish poo and leftover food settles on the bottom of a tank till you go barbottom. I'm glad that I have the opportunity to siphon it out of my tank instead of letting it rot in the sandbed. Yah know?
Anyways, I'm meeting a guy today about starting a local reef club. I hope all goes well with that!

Updated!

If you click on the pics, you can see where I outlined the new growth and where it's visually improved. New flesh is growing over the old skeleton and some parts of it is actually growing again. Just going to take a little time to cover the rest of it and grow in nicely. I'm hoping with new light bulbs, it will increase growth and color and help it heal better. Maybe I'll be able to frag this baby in a year or less. :D

Still staying clean! I'm going to do a water change on the tank sometime this next week. I gotta siphon out some of the fish poo. lol. I might just use an airline tube for that. Won't take much to do it. I haven't done any supplements in the tank. Calcium is sitting at 380ppm, alkalinity at 8dKh. I'm not sure if I increase calcium and alkalinity if that monti will grow in any faster or not. I know the main part is probably getting new bulbs, and a new heater to stabilize temp better.
