Megan - It's ok, you don't have to PM me the coral laws in your local area. They don't apply to me in Louisiana. But thank you though! And no, you are not hijacking my thread at all. I enjoy good conversations. Ask away. lol I use API brand test kits and they are liquid, but definitely not the best. I use them primarily because they are easy to use, have clear instructions and are relatively cheap (under $30 for a set) If I were to pick a brand name test kit, I would prefer to use Salifert - but at a little less than $20 for each individual parameter test, I'll pass for the time being. I may pick up three of their test kits though in the future - calcium, alkalinity and magnesium to get better accuracy then what I have now. I also like Seachem brand test kits and they work pretty well. Once my aquarium is cycled, I never worry about ammonia, nitrite, nitrate or phosphate. I know with my algae scrubber going full force and a very good oversized protein skimmer with the occasional water change that I don't really need to test it. I usually look for algae growth over everything to determine my water quality. Since algae sucks nitrate and phosphate out of the water - you will almost always get an inaccurate nitrate and phosphate reading, but if you pay attention to how much algae is growing in the tank then you can get a more accurate determination of your water quality.
Coralline algae is not bad at all. It's an algae, so it stabilizes your water parameters, uses some nitrate and phosphate from the water column, prevents undesirable algae from growing, and makes the tank look pretty, imho. Some people don't like coralline algae for some reason - and I can respect that - it grows everywhere. lol. But I like it.
So, I tested my water again last night and dKh came up from 7 to 10. I'm happy now. I'm going to re-test both ca and alk in a few days. My bulbs are coming in next week probably, and will be just in time for the new frags that I bought.
Frags arrive in the mail tomorrow morning! I'm really excited. I'm going to take off part of the morning tomorrow to take care of my new pets.
Since I just quit one of my maintenance accounts, I am stuck with an extra 30g of 1.026 saltwater that I was going to do a water change on a maintenance account - but I guess I'm going to use it for my tank now. So.... I think something like 5g a week or something like that will be plenty until I run out of new salt water. I'm also going to aerate the water a day or so before I do a water change with it, since it will be bottled for a month or so before use.

Oh, and I'm considering buying a Oceanic 900 powerhead for additional flow... I have a Koralia 240gph nano and a couple of JBJ 500gph wavemakers in the tank, not including the return, but I just feel like the tank needs even more flow. I'm hoping to accomplish this with a larger constant pump.
If this doesn't work, I'll consider saving up for that MP10 that I have had my eye on.

Doing a water change tonight. Woohoo. Going to see about keeping alk and ca the same in the new saltwater as the old saltwater. Practicing to keep alk stable.

actually phosphate inhibits coraline growth.... as far as I know coraline uptake little to no phosphate at all. its a calcerous algae and consumes mainly calcium and alkalinity. though I am unsure about nitrate consumption, I dont believe it is very high.

Eh. From what I read, all algae use some fertilizer to grow. Might. It be much at all, but they do. Have you ever fertilized your front yard? Coralline algae is like grass. Fertilize it a little and it wil turn green and grow quickly. Fertilize it a lot and you will kill it. That's the best analogy I can come up with at the moment. Lol it does seem that it doesn't use anything at all to grow - just like SPS corals only seem to use light, calcium and alkalinity to live and grow when in fact in the wild, nitrates and phosphates are present in such small quantities that corals have learned to use much less to build their tissues because of so much competition for it in he wild. Have you ever read in someone's SPS threads where once they add a fish or two to their setup for the extra bioload their SPS corals darken up and begin to grow better and faster? Even though their tank seems sterile? It's the tiny extra little bit of bioload that is helping fertilize the corals and coralline. I'm not saying that it removes a Whole lot by any means.
Anyways, corals arriv this morning! Tracking it said that it's about an hour and a half away in the next. It city over. This means I gotta go to work this morning instead of acclimating my new additions.
My wife and I are getting really excited! 5 more weeks and we get to meet our baby girl!

Woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Corals just came in. I'm temp acclimating right now!!! I'm absolutely thrilled at the size of these frags. Other sites say a two inch frag and you get exactly a two inch frag. Anyways, I got a freebie with my order too! Alabama grape montipora capricornis! Woohoo!!!
Pics will come as I get everything acclimated. It's feels weird to be at home acclimating corals and off of work. Lol. Least I got outta putting in deer ears. Lol!!!
This just makes me so happy. :)

Ahh!!! They aren't even done acclimating yet. The frags are huge compared to other sites. I am so happy with the purchases. They are also better packaged than other frag sites that I have dealt with in the past. His packaging was ingenious. He took a sheet of styrofoam and cut it into rectangles and took a cardboard box and just fit it in there snug, put everything in there with some bubble wrap and peanuts and taped a hand warmer on the inside of the top in a paper towel. Genius, if you ask me. lol, and it cut down on shipping costs for him. Now that makes me want to get some more next week. :D
Anyways... I got about 30 more minutes of acclimation before they are ready to put in the tank. So far they look like they are doing well in the bags. Oh, and most if not all of them are mounted on plugs. I think they are small ceramic tiles, actually. Just another cost saver. I'm liking this coral propagation thing... I might get into it later. lol

crappy phone pic. from left to right, alabama grape montipora (freebie), montipora spongodes, pink lace birdsnest, purple smoke montipora capricornis, valentine demacornis. ,montipora greensleeves digitata.
and then finally my favorite, I think...

Montipora palawanensis. Sorry for the sideways pic. lol. It's bright green with blue polyps. Very pretty.
As they acclimate more and get used to the tank and lights, their colors will come out more.

Well coralline is not the traditional algae, it is calcareous. It thrives off of calcium along with other things.

Well, the monti green sleeves does not like my tank. no necrosis yet, but the polyps aren't extending at all. The spongodes is trying to extend its polyps but there a way to go. The rest are lookin really good. The damicornis probably will need a high flow area. I'm considering buying another powerhead for additional flow. Though, I would like to get one of those sweet mp10s.
Any reason why the green sleeves isn't showing pe?
