LOL! Thanks buddy for commenting on this thread. It makes me happy when anyone gives me a comment, good or bad. If I didn't want comments, I wouldn't be sharing. lol.
I think I am really going to enjoy that skimmer as well. I have really put a lot of research and thought into this model and I know that it will really work out for me. I just have to learn how to dial it in really well and figure out how to rig something up to keep it from splashing so bad in the sump. Metric fittings don't help at all. lol. But, I learned of a modification that I can use to add a T to it and a vent - so I'll be sharing that detail here pretty soon. I actually put this skimmer on my 20g tank. The air intake is really loud - it almost sounds like a fan going. lol. I am going to stuff some cotton into the air damper and see if that quiets it down some without affecting the skimmers ability to skim. Another thing that I noticed is that 8" of water might not be enough for the skimmer to skim well... I may have to go up to 9" or even 10" of water in my 20g long sump skimmer chamber to really get what I need out of it. Just little tweaks that I'll have to work on here and there.
I added some of that polyfil acrylic fiber pads they use for quilts and man, I tell yah, it is really catching some nasty stuff! Best part is, it's cheap and you can get a lot of it.
As far as the LEDs,... I am kind of hesitant to buy an LED unit that does not contain more than two color spectrums. I may look into the Chinese CREE LED Dimmable units that can be used with a controller - but even those are getting up there next to a Vega or Radeon. I might just save up for a decent American made (put together) LED light fixture than go with one of those knock-off units. I think for the hardware I need, the metal halide bulbs, and the sockets will run me a little over $200. I know - that's the price of one of those units. LOL. And... it's only $300 away from a decent LED fixture. Heck, who knows, I might get a tek light with some ATI T5 bulbs and a couple of stunner strips and call it done. lol
I did find a six bulb T5 unit with "grow lamps" for $200. I'd have to replace the bulbs - but then again, the bulbs for it would cost nearly $200 more. So... kinda stuck on just investing in LEDs while I can get the money.
My pleasure man,
For my skimmer I used a PVC 90 deg elbow fitting and kinda just jammed it on the out put of the skimmer. It really helped the splashing... A LOT!! I can not remember what size it was. but it was a pain finding anything that fit. I think I took the output to Lowe's and just tried everything until something fit (actually, I took a scrap piece of PVC that was the same size as the output).
I can not remember the exact height my sump chamber runs but I think it is closer to the 9" or 10". 8 I think is a little low. I did some research online to see what everyone said the optimal height was.
That Polyfil is crazy good at collecting all the junk in our tanks. I have been using it for a while now and I am amazed every time I change it. Brown and green grossness.
LED"s... Ugg. I wish that I had enough $$ to get the Vega's or the Radions but three units is killing me. I would like to save a couple years and get the premium LED fixtures. But over $2000.00 is just crazy!!! I really might just "try" a dimmable Chinese fixture. Better then buying new MH bulbs for me. I really wish some one just made the choice for me. LOL.

My vote would be to go for a chinese LED and save over the course of a couple years for the "premium" LED. You can get two LED units like I have for $350, and since there are no bulbs to buy, you're set. Even if it's a sub-par unit and it only lasts 3 years, that's 36 months of savings...or $55 bucks a month in a seperate super-duper LED account that will wind up netting you $2K. And just think where LEDs will be in terms of functionality and price in 3 years.
I've said it before, and I really believe it. We are in the infancy of LED aquarium lighting right now. We're just getting an idea of what we can do and the degree of control we can assert with these units. Prices will go down on the current models while newer, fancier units will come in to fill the high-end price point. A unit similar to the $2K vega that you're looking at today might well cost less than $1k in just those few years.

You know what, you make a really good argument. I guess I will do more research on those lights. By the time that I buy those halides and everything to go with it to get them to function properly I could have already bought a pair of those LED fixtures. PM me a link.

I couldn't resist the temptation. I installed the Diablo skimmer on my 20g nano. LOL! It's broken in and skimming like a champ. As a side note, since I moved my tank - I have had a coralline explosion for some reason. I dosed some alkalinity and calcium and magnesium this evening just to see how it responds.

I am absolutely loving the lights on the inside of the stand. It's going to be so much easier to do any sort of maintenance down there now. I pretty much also know how much equipment I will be able to fit next to the sump as well.

I am going to replace those cheapy child locks with something a lot nicer in the future. Right now they will do for my purposes.

The stand looks awesome!!!!
Thanks Krista.
It's not one of my better stands. I'm just ready to get some water in this sucker. lol. I also left a lot of the imperfections in this stand... it reminds me that I am human and that I can make mistakes and be ok with those mistakes. I can strive for perfection but I don't have to be perfect - in other words, I am flawed, and my own personal stand reminds me of it. I made it personal to me. :D
Im anxious to get some glass cut for the sump as well as get the tank drilled for the overflow. Once those two things are done - I can pretty much start putting water in it.
I decided that I am going to enjoy this tank as a FOWLR for a couple of months and save for those Chinese LED lights in the mean time. I'm going to use the stock lighting that came with the tank for the fish for now. I kinda want to get my initial algae spikes all done and over with before I start adding SPS corals.
One of my main frag suppliers seems like a pretty reputable dealer. The way he quarantines everything off and hasn't added any additional corals in years to his grow out tanks lets me know that I am getting a good quality product that should be relatively free of pests. I just don't really want to start adding many SPS corals until I get my calcium reactor up and going and figure out how to add an ATO Reservoir to the system.

Nope
Standard 1st grade 2x6 pine. You never want to use pressure treated wood around your aquariums. Pressure treated wood has all kinds of chemicals to kill organisms... those chemicals have the remote possibility of ending up in your water - and should never be used. Also, pressure treated wood does not stain well at all. If you are going to build a stand like mine, I highly suggest plaining the 2x6's and cutting then all square before continuing with the build. Cutting everything flush will make it look a lot better. I just threw this stand together because I am ready to get on with the build. If this were a customers stand, it would have been done a lot differently.

I need some mechanical filtration ideas.
I have a 1 1/2" overflow pipe coming into the sump. I was thinking of one of those Eshopps filter sock things for my sump, but I think they only go up to 1". So,.... I need some ideas for how to filter the incoming water. I was hoping to do something nice and clean looking - and keeping up with washing filter socks should no longer be a problem for me. I would really like one of those filter sock contraptions, but I can't seem to find one that is 1 1/2"

you can always buy this http://www.afishybusiness.com/CPR-Aquatics-Sump-Inlet-Assembly-w-Filter-Sock-4-p/cpr05102.htm?gdftrk=gdfV23840_a_7c1870_a_7c7857_a_7cCPR05102 and drill a 1½" in let hole

Yeah, i saw that. I dont like that one because it is non adjustable. I might get the eshopps one as long as i know i can use a 1 1/2" pipe. I might get two of them so that i can run my skimmers output through a sock to cut down on bubbles. Hopefully i will only have one baffle in the sump.

So,... I drilled the tank today and installed the glass holes overflow. Drilling glass is actually pretty easy. Just set your clutch really low... on 2 or so , spin at a medium pace and don't drill tempered glass... And you're set! Pretty easy to do. I wasn't nervous at all doing it - I knew if I had broken that pane of glass I would have had to re-do the entire silicone job and get it professionally done at a glass shop - so no pressure. LOL
The overflow itself installed easily and I am going to bet will not leak one bit. I used their magic lube on it and it seems like that is going to get a really good water proof seal. The installation was really easy and straight forward.
I'll be adding 2g at a time to this sucker every chance I get until it is filled. Tomorrow after class I am going to get the rest of the hardware and maybe even get a pane of glass from Lowes and finishing er' up tomorrow. Hopefully will get the tank running by this weekend.

we just had a glass drilling demo at our last club meeting... much easier than I thought too!!!
I like that you drilled it on the side :)
