I've just been changing out with R/O salt water from the fish store. How else would I prepare?
She was referring to mixing your own water. If you buy water for water changes, then you're fine.

If you buy it premixed I guess that's good enough for now...
Most people mix there own, but that will be a lesson for when you are ready to do that
good luck for now...I'm off to bed....

So I decided to give myself a distractor to keep from impulse buying for my saltwater tank.
[plus ever since I got my nano set up; everyone has been saying how boring my fresh water system is in comparison]
So yesterday I upgraded my freshwater tank.
I'd been running an undergravel filtration system with a small penguin powerhead with medium/ large gravel. with (2) 10 watt compact flourescent lights. Its a 15 gallon tall with the footprint of a basic 10 gallon.
Yesterday; I bought new JBJ lighting; and a penguin 150 biowheel(for up to 30 gallon systems). Replaced the substrate with medium sand and the clay medium for plant fertilization (can't think of the name at the moment).
Anyways, bought several new live plants, and will be re-introducing my livestock tonight once the cloudiness goes away. Will add new pics tonight when I get a chance.
Livestock includes;
2 angels
chinese algae eater
pictus catfish
rainbow shark
scissor tail
keep ya posted

So anyways the substrate I got is mixed with flourite red, its supposed to do well with planted tanks.
So here are the pictures taken after getting everything set up and waiting for it to settle yesterday afternoon

The following pictures I took today after work after adding my fish.

Lemme know what you think! :)

Thanks, I'm thinking about waiting a while to see how the plants do and if they thrive I may get a few neon tetras to have a mini school. I think I can only add like 4 more though and the tanks at capacity.

I've considered that, but the way I have the tank laid out, it's sort of a divider between my sitting area and my poker table. Since its sticking out of the wall length wise not width wise, I may add a black background to the side against the wall though, not a bad idea.
Danky: Let me know how the temperature adjustment works out for you. During the summer I will probably not run the heater at all and may get a fan to attach to the small acess lid.

Yea when you view it from both sides you can't do much. I was wondering if thats what the situation was. I'm gonna take my feeding lid off and try lights at night. I just can't really afford to run my house a/c all day when im at work, so im hoping that will help. I may also position a fan right near the top of the tank and see how that works. The bummer is that I'm leaving for vacation in like two days so hopefully i can figure something out and there isn't a heat wave while im gone.

Oh and thats a sick picture of the crab on the top of the rock. "King in the Castle, King in the Castle, look at me, I have a rock!" haha

haha, yeah it worked out great considering the shrimp hangs out under the rocks hidden away. I was glad the crab he took a different locaton.

So funny story; for my freshwater tank I added some neon tetras (the really small ones with red and blue) last night. Then went to checking my salts parameters. I swear every time I turned around another tetra was missing. Originally I thought it was my pictus catfish that was doing the damage (they're known to eat anything they can get their mouth on).
Turns out it was the angels. Is this common? I never knew that angels were carnivorous (granted one of mine is 4" tall by 3" long)This morning there were no tetras and they are now chasing around my original tetra who has been in the tank for longer than the damn angels. I think I taught them a bad trick~! Too bad, cause I thought the plants would provide hiding space.

YES...Do you know angels are in the cichlid family....I had the same thing happen years ago...

I had no idea. Good to know though. I can always get some small tetras as snack food, haha jk.
So anyways, my ammonia levels in my saltwater tank ended up being nill. So After waiting another week I added another clown to replace the one I lost. He seems to be doing well. I'll take some more pictures when I get a chance.
Otherwise my oriental sweetlips is still alive, and its been almost two weeks now(many predicted he wouldn't last long). I've been feeding him arcti pods and the occasional brine shrimp.

oh and meowzer I forgot to tell you I took your advice last week and got several nassarius snails.
Do you go out of the way to feed yours, or just let them scavange?

I don't "purposely" feed my snails...lol...They eat what's in the sand, and what they get to before the fish
