Ok,
I will go out on a limb here... I believe Mr. Bubble.
I have a daughter that when she was young loved to tell stories which at times were not exactly true. Two come to mind, one day when getting some clothes out of the dryer in the basement she came up and said there was a duck in the basement. My wife and I did not believe her, there was absolutely no way a duck could get in our basement. So I went an checked it out, and came up with a duck, full grown at that!
When playing in the yard, she came running in the house and said a bear was in the yard, and we are thinking "she is crazy". Well a couple of days later we are talking to our neighbor and the neighbor asked if we say the bears in our yard. A few years later, we saw 1 less than a mile away.
I would still like to see the pics though.

This is pretty funny. I don't believe a sponge would continue to grow out of water, but this thread is pretty amusing. I have to say.

what the HELL did i miss last night??? this is really funny! BTW, i go to a fish store every once in a while, and this guy has a 12" tree sponge. well, to make a long story short, it hasn't grown more then an inch or so in the past year its been in his store.

While I can't say for sure whether I believe Mr. Bubble or not, one thing that might be cleared up is about the dead area on the sponge. If the sponge is growing more from the bottom rather than the top portion, then as it grows it would be pushing the healthy top part out of the water which would then die.
One thing you should think of Mr. Bubble is putting the sponge back in the spot it was originally in. Sometimes a different circulation pattern will end up killing the sponge.
I've been in the fish hobby nearly all my life, although only recently into salt, but one thing I do know is that nothing is written in stone. Things that they said couldn't be done years ago (like keeping sps corals) are now commonplace. The newest technologies (like undergravel filters) are now scorned. People told me that (this was several years ago) I couldn't breed freshwater rams in my hard alkaline water, and even if I did, the eggs would never hatch. Well, you know what? They bred and the eggs hatched and I raised the fry. That's why I might be skeptical but I will keep my mind open to the possibility.
At the very least, this has been entertaining
:D
Oh, and Mr. Bubble.....I don't believe anybody hates you!

OMG this is the funniest thread I have ever laid eyes on!! I went to bed last night and it was "just getting good", but this morning I got up and saw there had been a ton of posts that I had to catch up on!!
Mr. Bubbles...please...you're killing me. I do believe that you have some sort of sponge in your tank-- may it be a kitchen sponge??
By the way..you didn't ask ALL of us if we were killers...even if someone on this board was a convicted rapist/murderer/child molestor would we admit it?!

Sammy,
The story that I told you is actually true and it was just a male mallard duck. Normal size. How it got in the basement is still unknown to my wife and I.
reeferkeeper,
How do you keep the top of the sponge looking so good? Do you mist it with saltwater? Just kidding...
