Squidd.......Teach me.....DYI:Plumbing 101 on a SW Tank

I just got an email from GlassCages. Not so good news.
and I quote:
"Base size 36 x 12 1/2 is the largest that will fit in the stand.
Height can be varied."
My 29g tank is 30 1/2 x 12 1/2 so do I waste the money to have one built when I could just use the 29G plus something else. Even if I have to have the sump/fuge seperate?
Also, I will be adding 2 doors on the ends of the stand. So there will be a total of 3.
What do I do now Squidd? Do we have to make new sump/fuge plans or is there something we could still work with?

36x12 1/2x17 would be around 70.00 for the acrylic tank or 36x12 1/2x18 for glass is 50.00. Is ther much of a difference in acrylic or glass for sumpfuge?

Ahh, Stop yer whining...it ain't the end of the world....Yet...

"Ideally" ...I would like to see 30-40 gallons for your fuge (or more... )and another 20 or so for the sump..."Ideally"...
But...we are going to work with what you have, and what's available, and the "space" confines you (and most people face)...
I'd like to use the 29 you already have for the sump and "stack" a 20 gallon rubbermaid on top for the fuge...
But ...The RubberMaid is 12" tall and your 29 is what 17" or 18" tall...? Plus another 5" or so for lights on the fuge...34"...??
I don't think you have that Kind of room under the stand...
So... The next option would be to get the 36x12 1/2x13 (option A. above) for the sump >>>I want the glass tank for the sump, so you can silicone the baffles in and control skimmer level and bubble transfer<< and then "stack" the 12" rubber Maid on top...plus 5" for lights...30"....
Do you have room for that if we tuck the fuge lights way up high...??
If we can't do that your next (better) option would be to buy a cheap 20 "long" for the sump and then place the 29 "next to" the tank as a fuge/display...
Then you have a decent sized fuge (for "show") and the equipment is hidden in the sump under the tank...

I like this plan.........Let's do it......:joy:
Plus that allows me to get inside and work if I need to. The new skimmer is 20" in height. So I don't want to push my luck.

Hold up...............hold those horses........
I gotta think about this again............I dun confused myself. I will get back to you.
I will have to check with Michael and my re-decorating crew(me).
:notsure:

Yeah, you should have a good 24" to 26" clearance in side the stand....at least I do...
Oh wait...That's cause I took this stuff into concideration "before" I built it...:D

Squidd,
Your hindsight should be Leona's 20-20 vision!
I'm already in the "gotta make do w/ the room I've got mode. I'll call it practice for the 250 I want in a year or so!

This looks great. Is this ideally how you want it spaced out?

would you mind explaining to me your concern with the height of your skimmer?

Personally I don't think that the height of the sump/fuge should be the same height as your skimmer. My skimmer will be 20" in height. I would think you need some kind of clearence to take the cup out or do any maintence. Maybe somone that has a euro reef es5-3 could tell me. Also the higher the height of the sump/fuge wouldn't you need to prop up the pump cause 10" of water is all that ideally you need to run the skimmer?

this is why this is a teaching thread. I'm learning...........I might not be a genius. But with baby steps I will get there. To learn at least about my tank.

I was just kidding with you leona
and nothing personal or bad was intended. Soryy if I offended in any way. Sometimes things don't come out in print as they would in person.
You're exactly right and this is a learning thread and I've got smoke rolling out of my ears. Your learning process has helped me and I'm sure many others.
But aren't you in the process of ordering all this new stuff for your new tank/stand etc...?

If it's not 1 thing it's 1000. I did expect this. But I just need to break things down a little more for myself.
