wow.. nice tank!!! can we have a new FTS!!
Full tank shots are tough with a 10 foot long tank. First picture is the best that I can do. The second is the left side, third, the middle, and fourth the right side of the tank.

Quick contest (just to disuade anyone thinking of doing this):
1- How much was set up / fish / coral /etc.?
2- Daily time spent on tank, feeding, maint. etc.?
3 -Monthly maint cost, salt, food, elec.?
Here's my quick guess:
1- $20,000
2 - Avg. 1 HR... probably 30 hrs a month,, almost a full work week.
3 - $250,, around 1/2 of a car payment, with no payoff date.
In the ballpark goodwin ?
btw,, cool tank.

Ha, no thanks. It took me over an hour to just lightly skim this thread. (a fasinating thread, or no way would I have spent that amount of time)
No telling how long it'd take to fully read through all ~1,500 posts, stop when hardware, fish, coral, elec. specs, lights, etc..etc. are called out,,, look them up,, then cost them..... maybe when I retire.
I absolutely love the work Goodwin has done with this thread and project, and offer sincere kudo's for sharing it with the viewing public... but the question stands. We can have fun with it, or dismiss it, Goodwin's call to decide if he want's to offer an estimated net or not... I just thought it'd be fun to inject a lil' mini-contest into the mix.
My 20k estimate comes from what I've been told by other folks who maintain salt water aquariums.. .. that the cost tends to be exponential as you go up in size rather than linear. Since I've probably dumped at least 2k into my 75g, I actually thought the 20k estimate would be light..... but I could be wrong.

I am not being a jerk, but this question is asked all the time. All of his equipment is listed in the thread and you could look up and add the prices to find out how much it might cost you for the same setup. I am sure that Goodwin is frustrated with people asking this question over the last year or so.
BTW, 20k seems a little bit of an exaggeration but I could however be wrong.

I've just spent the last 3 hours going over this entire thread and I am in complete awe! You have accomplished what I hope to mimic one day, though most likely on a smaller scale. Great job! I do have one question though. What kind of nem is in the last photo and where did you get it? I have to have one.

I am just in shock!!! I am new here and can't believe what I just saw... Now from what I've been reading it seems like people are watching your tank from a video camera. How does that work?? Do you have a seperate web site? Well anyways the tank is awesome and can't wait to see more on this thread

Thank you! You can view the tanks via the live web cams @ DakotaReef.com. Click on the tank on the left. Most should be working other then the 150 FOWLR which is located in my bedroom. You may need to install ActiveX control in order to be able to view the live video.

What kind of anemone is that in the last picture? The purple with green tips. I have never seen one like that before and would love to have one. Can you pm me on where you got it? Thanks

with a tank that size and as natural reef setting as it is, have you had any fish spawn?
My Clowns have been laying eggs, but I am afraid that they become food when they hatch. I would like to see the Banggai Cardinalfish breed, but I think the same will happen.

Most of your little fry will become live food, but you just might spot one or two in your sump, so be sure to check from time to time.
If you ever decide to raise the little Bangaii get ready for a lot of work.
But I can say I'm glad I did it, even if it is just this once.

It's a Green Tipped Purple Anemone. I had never seen one before I found this one.

hey- goodwin,... Why aren't there any sps corals in your tank? lol.
Look closely, there are a few in the tank that have done well. Not nearly the number I wanted, but I guess I am more of a fish man than a SPS grower........

MAJOR PUMP MAINTENANCE I was able to talk a couple of local reefers to come over and help tear apart, and clean most every pump running on all of my tanks. 9 Blue Lines, 9 Quiet Ones, 5 Mags, and 4 Eheims. Mike & Dustin had no idea of what they got themselves into........After I got out of the way and let Dustin take the pumps off the systems, things went a little smoother. Mike took them apart and put them together and to my surprise, they all ran when they were put pack together!!!!!!! Ran all of the submersible pumps through a vinegar bath pictured below. I was amazed at how clean a number of the Blue Lines were for having run in their systems for up to two years without any cleaning. The Eheims on the Deltec Skimmer were spotless having run just about a year now with no cleaning. The Eheims on the H&S had a few issues on the first, so we stopped with the other two and ordered some new spindles & washers that were showing tremendous wear in a little over a years time. Took nearly 4 1/2 hours, but got them all cleaned up and put back & up and running.
This leaves me on my own tomorrow to clean all of the Maxi Jets, Tunzies, & Vortech's. Think I will just run them in the vinegar bath for a while and them place back in the tank.
Biggest problem turned out to be having to drain the 3 largest sumps as there wasn't a shut off valve between the pumps & sump. (Design mistake...)
Wasn't nearly as bad as I thought that it might be, but I am glad that it is all over!!!!

Just amazing
what a little water & vinegar can do for pumps...

Way low on the estimate. His coral and fish purchase are near that, maybe North of it too!

P.S. I don't ping this thread because I just watch the video stream. Keep spending and enjoying G-Man, always gives me an out with the wife!
