Crimzy, what in your opinion is the smallest and easiest ray to keep? I have a 220 with quite a bit of sand bottom. I really like the look of your blue spot but i believe that particular one is the less hardy of the two blue correct? I was kind of looking towards the cortez ray is that a better idea? Im in iraq currently so nothing is coming right away. Just planning ahead.

I'd go with the yellow or the cortez. Of the two blue spots, the ribbontail is hardier and better suited to an aquarium. But they are both a challenge. Good luck and let me know if you need any advice when the time comes.

I know this thread is old.. but I have a cortez ray, hes pretty neat. very small still, hes being housed in a 125 right now, eats krill and mysis shrimp. we plan to start introducing silversides here soon. We do plan to upgrade our tanks in the next couple years
'

the only odd thing about mine i would have to say is, it doesnt hide under the sand.. its always out. really makes for an interesting creature to have around.. we LOVE it!

Very cool little guy... every aquarium stingray that I've seen is pretty active. My yellow was basically in constant motion as a youngster and now is about 50/50 hiding to swimming. Blue dots actually never rarely bury themselves, (just a random tidbit of info).
Good luck with yours.

thank you sooo much, that honestly makes me feel so much better. i thought for sure there was something wrong with my little guy and at this stage im already hopelessly attached. In my 125 thread (in the share your aquarium thread) you can see just how small he is. Are we feeding the right diet for it?? and is there any way to find out gender??

Both of my Calis would rarely bury. They would do the same crazy dance at feeding time too. up and down the glass. The female actually used to raise her disc in the middle and suspend there for a few minutes at a time! Pretty good opporitunity to check her belly and gills though.

ADEE- The males will have two claspers under the two small "fins" at the rear of the disc just before the tail. Females wont have any. The ray on the glass in the above pic is female.

Does your ever swim upside down along the surface? Mine has picked up this trick in the last year or so.

YUP!!! They love to make messes with aquarium water dont they? Do yours ever splash you on purpose if you walk by and they're hungry and you dont feed them? Thats another favorite activity.

Yeah, they can be voracious eaters. Mine will steal the nori from the clip and even eats Formula two pellets.

I wish you could... cause I'd love to have a blueface or majestic angel. The experts say no. Though I'm sure there are some docile angels where it MAY work but the general rule is that they are not compatible.

Even dwarf angels need to be watched over time. My old coral beauty picked my ray. On night in the 55 with the brazillian dragon moray straightened him out. Tangs are a no-no too. Had problems with those too.

WOW...I have a yellow, sailfin, and blue hippo tang...I am telling you none of them bother each other...it's like they all belong in one happy tank
Maybe your tank was too small...did you say a 55?

A couple points here...
(1) Meowzer, it's hard to say what works or not after a few months or so. I had a sohal tang with my ray for about a year and a half before it started to beat the crap out of my ray. Which brings me to my second point...
(2) I disagree with about the statement above regarding tangs. Of course some tangs should be avoided, such as sohals, clowns, achilles, and some of the other aggressive tangs. However I've had my purple tang with my ray for 5 years now, my large hippo and blonde naso for over 3 years and my 2 yellows for over 2 years with no problems... I think most tangs actually should be considered safe... but watched carefully.

No, the tank I moved the angel to was a 55 with nothing but the eel in it.
Everything else was in a 180.
The blond naso was the worst offender. Got to the point where I had to get rid of the tang. Im glad you have been having luck with it though.
