You said it's a brand new pump?
YUP.....and it is doing the same thing the other one was doing.....The other pump was about 13 months old when it started doing this

I'm gonna call the people, but WHY would it do the same thing
I'm wondering if there is something else that I should be looking at

Is it possible the pump is starving for water or cavitating?
NOPE.....the section it is in is filled to the top.....
I just talked to the people, and they want me to change the impeller (I bought one of them too) if this works, they will send me a new impeller.....if not
.....I told the guy it might work fine for a week before it stops, and he just said to let him know
SOOOO...I will try that, if this doesn't work, I am seriously thinking of modding my Mag7 to use. I use it for water changes, and now I can use my old Catalina 3000 for them......

Lois,
it sounds like it's the 'nature of the beast'. IIRC, those are questionably-made Chinese pumps. is the pump being used as a venturi (needle wheel impeller) or is it the feed pump for a recirculating skimmer? could it be water level related, as in the skimmer isn't working well because the level isn't optimum (just tossed a ASM Mini G for that), or are you sure the pump is stalling?
which skimmer do you have? does the skimmer mfg offer an "optional" pump?
just some 'top of my head' thinking here...
i have to admit that i've tossed more than a couple of pumps that have done that, as no matter what i did, they needed to be "kick-started"

LOL....This is what I have...It is a sea-life systems pro set-up....came with everything
Attachment 243068
The skimmer is on the left, the black thing on the bottom is the pump, and the water level is all the way at the top....If you can see the white piping in the pic...it comes off the skimmer..has an elbow, and goes up into the skimmer tube...I'm gonna guess and say 6"
What do you think about me using the mag 7????? I am sure I can mod the skimmer pipes to fit if I have to.....

Did you try putting the new impellor in th pump? I don't see why you couldn't mod and swap to the Mag pump. Definitely would be more reliable. If the flow is alot more you could always valve it Dow before it enters the skimmer.

I believe the CA3000 has it's own venturi and that's where the air for the skimmer is sucked in from, right? The air line goes down to the pump?
If that's the case, to get the Mag 7 to work, you'll need to make to your own venturi. To be honest, all of my attempts at one have failed. Pondmaster does make stuff for the Mag 7;
"Pondmaster Mag 7 Fractionating Impeller Assembly" &
"Pondmaster Venturi Assembly for Mag-Drive 2-7"

Oh and here's a testimonial for Mag drives. This was off the Mag 18 I bought. It started to rattle quite loudly, but still ran and fired up. Opened it up, the steel part was so rusty and unbalanced, it caused the impeller shaft to snap. She still was pumping though. You can see the rub markings on the lower black area from making contact with the pump housing O.O

ummmmmm post #26..... not gonna cure the pump issue I am sure but could you get those multi plugs up vertical for me so that the salty water doesn't flow through them and kill someone. I was wondering, before I saw this pic of the plugs, if it could be an electrical issue. Maybe causing it to stop and start? With you beating it, like I know you beat your fish
, it makes me think its not electrical. Also wonder if you are somehow getting debris into the pumps some way? Maybe ??

Which tank is this skimmer on? Kinda hard to tell by the pic but I'm assuming the skimmer sits inside the sump on the far left side and the skimmer overflows onto the drip tray? What are the dimensions of the skimmer compartment?

This is on the 225G....as far as dimensions I would have to wait until tonight when I get home to measure it.
Yes, that is the skimmer on the far left, and yes...it overflows into the drip tray.
AQUA...if you look at the pic...the airline goes to the pvc pipe....

On a side note I know you like to order
have you thought about upgrading the skimmer?
I have always been happy with the skimmer.....(until recently) LOL....I bought the fittings for the mag7 yesterday, and may try it out this weekend...It's funny....when the pump is running good...who wants to mess with it

I know what you mean.... I would toy with it and see what you come up with. I thought I read you had bought the parts to fix the original pump? Have you put that one together and pulled it from the skimmer and just run in water? On the manufacturers specs what is the recommended water height?

I bought a new impeller for the old pump.....I figured I'd use it for water changes...LOL....
I have no clue about specs and height, It was my understanding when I got the set-up that the water level was to be at the top of the divider (you can't see it) It is between the skimmer section and the drip tray.....the water flows over the divider into the drip tray.

I'm just curious I'd it might be to much w
back pressure on the pump causing it to drop off? Is it possible to just take one of the pumps and run in a container with roughly 8" of water? I'm on my Iphone but what is the approximate depth of water the pump is sitting in? Does the water level in the skimmer section stay constant or fluctuate?

The water level stays constant....I'd have to measure it tonight when I get home, BUT the level really has to be where it's at in order for it to overflow into the center section of the sump/refugium...

Out of curiousity what is the flow rate on the pump you have? Possibly if the Mag doesn't work possibly a Sedra pump like what's used on the ASM and EuroReef skimmers.
