Don't buy a skimmer based on the size(height) of the skimmer. The key is to find a skimmer that will handle your gallonage, and usually the problem is the width (diameter) of the skimmer fitting the compartment. You need to elevate the skimmer up to the proper water level they recommend for the skimmer. I understand you saying you don't have alot of room height wise in the stand, but you might have to do a little modification and run something outside the stand. A skimmer as you know is an area not to skimp.

FINALLY HOME.....Gonna give you some measurements...
bottom of skimmer to water line 16 1/2"
PVC pipe is about 10" from pump into tube
I only have MAYBE 4" from cup to underside of aquarium.....BUT if I want to get lid off I think I can only use 3" of that
It's working at the moment, so I am gonna make me a drink, and sit and watch my ball game....LOL
I get home earlier on Wednesdays.....otherwise it will have to wait till I am off Friday....
I just hate to mess with something while it's working though....
