Swine Flu

I just read that the US has suffered its first fatality. A 23 month old toddler in Houston. That hit home for me because my son is 23 months and we are visiting Houston. Of all the weeks to visit my family.
I don't like being here with him so close to Mexico.
Part of me says....stupid media blowing things out of proportion. The parent side of me says ...23 month old toddler, wait, I have a 23 month old toddler. I would DIE if anthing happened to him!

good lord how many cases of the pig flu are there in the usa? 45 or 50. This is rediculous.
About 40,000+ people die from Flu every year in the US. Just to give some perspective...

The thing about this strain of flu is that our bodies don't have the immunity to fight it and regular flu medicine doesn't work. There are also no vaccines for it yet. That's what makes it more dangerous. Or so they say, that is if you believe what's on the news.

If this were the case then more than one person in the U.S. would have died from it already. Seriously, it is no different than any new flu virus that ever comes out.
We don't have flu vaccines for 50% of the flu viruses each year.
stop spreading panic and stop and think.

The baby just arrived in Houston from Mexico. It came across the border in Brownsville and started exhibiting the flu symptoms. The family took the baby to Houston where it died. It's very sad the baby died from complications of this flu, but considering the circumstances and where she came from, I'm not surprised. So technically, this shouldn't be considered a swine flu death in the US, not that it matters since a small child died just the same.

I wish the media would listen to your reasoning. Two school districts outside of San Antonio just closed all their schools until May 11th because they say they want to 'nip this at the bud'. This area is where three documented cases showed up. THREE. So now 23,000 kids are out of school sitting around with nothing to do for 13 days because the media has turned this into some panic frenzy. Parents are ticked because they have kids that aren't old enough to take care of themselves, and the daycare's don't want them in fear they may infect the infants they take care of. Not to mention they aren't staffed to handle this many kids right now. So the parents either have to take vacation, or time off without pay to babysit perfectly healthy kids. Meanwhile, thses kids aren't about to stay at home during this free break, and will just travel away from their isolated area to infect other regions (if they are sick), LIKE SAN ANTONIO. Guess I'll be staying away from the malls and other areas where large groups hang out for the next week or so.

I don't think this is a "epidemic" at all. It is just a FLU. If you live in a deplorable country with no healthcare you can DIE from the common cold if it gets bad enough.
Here in the US we can take medicine for the symptoms, increase our clear fluids (clean and accessible in the US) and get plenty of rest. This is not the case in third world countries where you have to fight for every crumb.
I think this is a "immigration" issue to scare us into closing the borders which is fine in my opinion. That child probably came here (to the US) just to get access to our "free" health care system. By the time she got here she was probably so dehydrated her body just couldn't fight it.
The other cases are probably do to the recent spring break. Most of the outbreaks her in the US is in California. Sounds like some folks took a little trip to Tijuana to party.

I just read where EGYPT has slaughtered all the pigs in their country due to the fear of this disease.

I just came up with a great idea. Why don't we get some volunteers to purposely catch the swine flu, and send them over to Afghanistan to congregate with the locals over there. Even Bin Laden won't be able to escape the wrath of this bug. With the deplorable conditions over there, we can wipe out Al-Qaeda within the week.

Well WHO just raised the flu "pandemic" alert to a level 5

and yes there are less than 100 cases in the usa. Geeze. So that is a .00000003% of the US population that is infected.

The problem with this strain of flu is it's affecting people between the ages of 20 and 40, not the young and old that you normally see get severely ill or die when they contract the flu. Tamiflu is showing significant relief for the symptoms of swine flu, and Napolitano is getting Tamiflu reserves shipped to the areas in the US where the majority of cases have been reported. The problem is, everyone is running with the media hype, and jumping to conclusions about whether they have the swine flu, or just a spring cold. The family that lives outside San Antonio that is in quarantine has had testing for swine flu completed. QUOTE]
The first US death is in a approx 2 year old.
I'm not sure where this will go. The next few days will give us an idea how bad it will be.

It has to do with transmission ( almost exponential depending on the virus), in this case an once of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If it is virulent enough and hits enough to take off, then there is no way to control the outbreak and you basically are stuck waiting it out, then cleaning up afterward. There's a breaking point with these viruses that if we can keep transmission from tipping over that point we stop the outbreak.
