alright i was basically planning on something almost exactly like your set up. i even have room set aside in the stand for a rubbermaid or maybe some small 20g type top off tank.
few questions:
1) what size is your top off tank, do you wish it was bigger, or is it a good size for your needs?
2) i was thinking of the top off tank too, but someone mentioned just having the RO unit directly top off the tank. i guess that is an option too, but then i would forego all of the niceties / conveniences you have built for yourself, no?
3) do you keep a pump in the salt can for mixing? right now when i make saltwater i mix it in the same type of can, but with a drill and a paintmixing drillbit. but i like being able to have aged salt all of the time.
1- I really can't remember....maybe 20 gal.

No, seems perfect size for me. I can leave town for 3-4 days at a time and not run out of water. I suppose a bigger topoff tank would allow for a longer time away, but I can't go longer than that (feeding wise) anyway, without having somebody stop by.
2- You could have the RO directly running to the tank, but it's such a SLOW process. You would have to manually turn it on/off just the same, or have a float valve (which I don't trust).
3- Yes, there is a small pump that stays in the bottom of the salt tub all the time. The plug runs up out of the top and stays on 24/7 keeping the 30 or so gals. of sw stirred up. Having 30 gals. of sw around at all times is a lifesaver IMO.

I found this thread again! You are going to love having a chiller. I don't miss those days with the larger tank and having all doors open to cool the stand and canopy down when the big MH's were on. We are running a Teco 1/3 and it's sitting next to the tank. Luckily it has a very modern look and the tank itself is louder than the chiller when it's running.
About your little birthday mishap. I actually thought you had it in your pocket and that's why everybody was staring at you

Yes, they are surprisingly quiet and work so well. Those MH's can put off some serious heat. After I come out of the tank sometimes, my back looks like I have been laying out on the beach it's so red

Hey, I still use the ring trick. Although I sometimes embarrass myself, it is yet to fail me

awesome. what pump do you keep in the SW can?
Well, I said "pump", but to keep the water stirred up, it's actually just a little cheap power head from some other tank. I don't remember the brand, but it's just enough to keep the water stirred up.
There is a "pump" in there too, but that's connected to the switch that I have upstairs for bringing the sw up during a water change. That pump is just an inexpensive pond pump that I got at Lowes. They are in the garden section. There is a chart on the back of the box that tells you how much verticle feet each pump is good for.

cool. i am not worried about vertical, my situation will be probably 10 feet horizontal :)
Then just about any pump would work for you. Horizontal doesn't count when figuring the size needed on the chart.

Tank looks really good. I remember seeing a picture of it on another thread.
Thanks KOgle. I think I have covered most of the setup, so hopefully next week I can start putting up some pics of the fish and corals. This little delay with the thread has given me time to get the corals growing, and to work on my fish list.

hey t316 do you have schematics for the dual garbage can water tank scaffolding?
No, I just drew it out on a piece of paper after seeing some other ideas on this site, then just started building it. Really, it was one of the most simple parts of the whole project. Take a look at those pics on page 3 (I think) and if you have any questions, or if the pic is not showing something clearly enough, just let me know.
Have you started your's yet? I think you said you were going to....

this weekend i installed those lighted inidividually switched DJ outlets from samash.com on both sides of the tank. this will allow me to turn the pumps on and off easily while near the tank. i will post pics tomorrow of that progress and link ya.
the next thing i want to do is build the scaffolding / pipework for the cans and install a utility sink, and finally the RO/DI.

alright check out the last post on my upgrade thread in the DiY section. basically i have my version of your salt/ fresh switches wired up.
today i have my brother's truck and i am going to the Depot on my lunch break to pick up a utility sink ($50) and the faucets for it etc...
i also was going to pick up the materials to build the water can mount that you have and another can.
what was the size of choice ? 1x3s ? how many feet did you use approximately? seems like its all made from the same size stuff. can you show me a close up or a sketch of the base ?

a utility sink... awesome. Best thing I got after my tank. Snagged one used from my neighbor. It's a must though...

saltn00b....are you talking about the white wood stand that the tubs are sitting on?

That is all made of some scrap wood I had around from the house build. Most of it is 2x6's, treated, since I thought I would probably get it wet occassionally. I painted it white just for appearance. Just frame up a square box, put some legs on it, and waaaalaaa. You don't even have to have a stand, but I wanted to be able to let gravity drop the upper (RODI) water down to the lower (salt water) without using another pump. I don't know why I raised the lower tub up (probably just to keep from bending over so much and to keep it off the floor) but it could just be directly on the ground level.

bump! so here is a question for ya, i am looking at your ball valves. you have one on the salt mixing can that is high up. you cant really fill up 5g jugs with salt at the station, is that correct?

I think I'm following your question, but the top can is the clean RODI water. The bottom can is the mixed saltwater. There is a fill up spickot all the way at the bottom, just high enough that I can slide a jug under it. But I rarely do this since I have a switch upstairs and a pump in the can that pumps it up there automatically. The ball valve up higher is just to close off the line, keeping water from going down to the mixing salt water can, or from going to the spickot.
