No more fish in QT. I'm going to clean it up and let it run FW for a few days before adding salt. It's a completely naked QT, nothing to cycle.

Man, set that quarantine up as a freshwater planted tank! :D
LOL, no way... I have no desire to take care of more than one tank. Once I get all the fish I would like (which will take me until December if I QT each order for 6 weeks) I'll be taking the QT down and putting it into storage. Whatever resources I have for my fish hobby (time/money/patience) I want to invest into the 125 to get it where I want it.
Could you imagine if I took another page from your book and went down to Pittsburgh's bayou, the three rivers, and pulled out some of OUR native fish for a FW planted tank? The tank would be decorated with empty cans of Iron City and Steelers license plate frames and the fish would most likely die if I used anything other than old toilet water and dirty fryer oil.
Ahhhhh, Pittsburgh, I love you!

About a month ago I was reading about our sewer system, which combines the street sewers and waste water into one system before being treated at Alcosan (Allegheny County Sanitization) . The problem is that the system is really old and once we get something like 1/10th of an inch of rain (which is nothing) the sewers can't handle it and they overflow into the rivers. Keep in mind that I read this article after a group of people were interviewed by the Post Gazette for some rope swing they put under one of our many bridges here in the 'Burgh. I'm glad that I read that before going to that bridge because the swing was calling my name big time.

We have the same problem here in the mountains. Every time it rains the level of Coliform reaches a peak. Seems that not only livestock, ie cattle, are polluting our rivers but the treatment facilities have to release "grey" water into the river before it is fully treated. This meaning the hard wastes have been skimmed and then the biological waste is released.
I will say I float this river in a kayak and canoe. Eat out of it? Swim in it? Ill pass.
Think how bad the Ganges in India is and that population is exploding. Gotta wonder if that water is brown from sediment or human waste.
My saltwater tank is so clean and healthy. Ahhhhhh

Well, I will not be swimming in the rivers any time soon...
I guess I will be ordering the 3 YT's tonight or tomorrow. I will be ordering them as small as I can since they have to go through a hypo treatment in a 30B.
In the DT I am noticing some green coloration on top of some of the rocks. If I remember correctly, when I first set this tank up years ago the rocks had a bit of green to them before they exploded w/ coralline. I'm hoping that's what it is. I haven't tested the water in that tank for quite some time and I have been ghost feeding it several times a week. I also haven't been cleaning the glass, so the snails have plenty to eat. Guess I will have to test the water tonight and maybe mix up a w/c. I have not noticed much, if any, growth in the chaeto in my refugium. It hasn't died back, though. Wonder if I need to change the bulb that lights it?

How old is the bulb, and what kind of bulb are you using? I switched to the LED bulbs that you can buy at HD or Lowes for like $20.00 on my fuge. It has been working out okay so far. I have researched the reefbreeders "fuge light" but I could not justify spending $80.00 + on a single light bulb (plus I would need two for my fuge).

Oh dude, it's old. It's just a plain old bulb. I have no luck with CFL light bulbs. I might look into the LED bulbs but for now I'm just going to put a new regular bulb in there and see what happens. I did test the DT and the big three came up unmeasurable. I'm assuming that since I've been ghost feeding and there is no Nitrate reading that the macro is doing its job.
The CC I added a week or so ago has stayed where I put it, which is nice. The other day I saw one of the five peppermint shrimp I added a while ago. I can't wait to see some more life in that tank.

I think those led bulbs from HD are really nice. Grow algae pretty well and they dont put heat in the water column like a regular bulb does. Plus, the bulb i have costs me only $1.84 a year to run.
I cant wait for your tank to get going either. Im anxious to know what your going to add. I cant wait for my tank either. :)

Here is a pic of the green on my rocks. So far it is only growing along the surface of the rocks; it is not developing "hairs". Also, it's not slimy but it has a slightly different texture than the rocks. I really hope this is the beginning of coralline and not something else

Just ordered three small yellow tangs. Should be here tomorrow. Will be doing prophylactic hypo. How long should I keep the tank at normal salinity before beginning to drop it?

Oops, the fish won't be delivered until Tuesday, which actually works out better for me.

Hey, Eric here was that info you asked about previously. Oh, change the bulb for sure. CFL's or horribly inefficient. They should be swapped every few months to maintain their intensity. You using a reflector?
API Test Kits do not have you're standard expiration date on them, instead they have a LOT NUMBER which is you're "hidden" date that they were manufactured.
The Last 4 Digits of the LOT NUMBER are your month and year that your test kit was manufactured.
Example the last 4 in this lot number was 1208 ... so this particular bottle was manufactured in December of 2008.
How Long Do Each of My Tests Last For:
Ammonia Test Solution # 1 - 3 Years
Ammonia Test Solution # 2 - 3 Years
Nitrite Test Solution - 4 Years
Nitrate Test Solution # 1 - 3 Years
Nitrate Test Solution # 2 - 3 years
GH Test Solution - 3 Years
KH Test Solution - 4 Years
High Range pH Indicator Solution - 3 Years
Phosphate Test Solution #1 - 3 Years
Phosphate Test Solution #2 - 3 Years
Calcium Test Solution #1 - 3 Years
Calcium Test Solution #2 - 3 Years
Copper Test Solution - 3 Years

Thanks man, I really appreciate that. I'm on the edge with a lot of my tests so I think it's time for me to get all new ones.
I am going to try to remember to go to HD this weekend to pick up an LED bulb and maybe a new light if I can find one that I think will work better than the one I have in there. Right now it's just a clip on desk lamp that I have clamped to the center cross brace of my stand. There is not much of a bio load in my tank so I don't expect to get a lot of growth from my chaeto.
The green coloration on my rocks has me a bit nervous. I really really hope that it's coralline and not a pending PITA. I did notice that it does not change throughout the light cycle. My experience with nuisance algae is that it seems to get worse as the day goes on, at least in the beginning stages. The other day I did scrape the front and side glass which I was keeping dirty for the snails. Hopefully if it is an unwanted algae the snails will now feed from the rocks and not the glass.

Sweatervest: you have two Photon 32's above your 125, yeah? When you ordered them did you get a custom color? What optics did you go with? How do SPS fare with these lights?

Eric, i had a photon 48 above my 75 for a while. Before my ro/di went on the fritz, my brown sps frags were colorin up really well. I got a custom color for mine. I asked for a 12k daylight look so they replaced a few royal blues with neutral whites. I also asked for neutral white moonlights instead of the blue. I like it like that, though i think i would have gone with cool whitea for moonlights instead.
Thy are very very powerful lights. You can only run them at first at 30%.

I'm just wondering the best way to get full coverage over the DT. I really ought to start doing a bit of research on LED's in general. I won't be ordering them until around the holidays; they will be my Xmas gift to myself, lol. I know that if I were to get them now I would have to get some frags to play with and I promised myself I would wait until the tank was 6 months old before I started doing that. It's the only way I can control myself

Why do you really want to wait 6 months? I think once you have your parameters set and steady for a month I would start with a couple frags and go from there.

I want to wait six months because I want my system to get established and balanced. I started out with dead rock and sand. The DT hasn't even seen fish yet. I'd really like to have whatever fish I want in the DT by the time the frag swaps start. I look forward to being able to take the QT down. I am in no hurry; I am really focusing on the health of the entire system. I set the system up again with a 6 month wait in mind. I don't see why I shouldn't do it, really.
