I know...... the lfs, it's accurate and free. Lol.... thats gotta be frustrating. Sorry.
Just my opinion...but I don't trust the LFS either. They are in a hurry and don't do the tests right..you know add a drop and shake, the guy I had double check mine years ago added, like 8 drops and shook the vial...and told me what the result was....safe zone he said. I told him he didn't do the test right, he said it didn't matter. No way, always get your own test kits and follow the instructions.

Lol..... i keep forgeting that not all fish guys are the same. I trust mine and he does take time for his clients. Sometimes it can be frustrating because we want to buy something and he is spending time with his other clients educating them on the fish/coral they just baught. He does educate his clients about the critters he sells to them.
I bought in some water for him to test one day and he took the time to not only test the water but stayed there until it was done and told me about the test kit he used and why he uses it.
Yes...... I do trust my fish guy!! (Hi Klaus!! )

But keep in mind..........we have a about 6 LFS that we don't trust AT ALL, most of which we won't even buy from. We are just really lucky to have our one great fish guy! Most I wouldn't trust as far as I could throw them.

I super new to this hobby.... not immediately trusting the lfs guys (simply because they work there) seems like one of the most important rules!
Here are some fabulous things my very 'trust worthy' LFS people have told me....
1. You should use two blue damsels to help cycle your aquarium...and it's totally appropriate to put them in 4 days after setting up your aquarium.
2. 3 Mexican Turbo Snails, an Urchin, and a few crabs would be great for a new 29 Gallon aquarium!
3. You don't need to change your biocube filter all that often just rinse it once a month.
4. A Lawn Mower Blenny doesn't really need the usual acclimation requirements, it's more hardy. Just acclimate it to the temperature for 15 minutes and then put it in the tank.
5. You should totally think about adding a Yellow Tang to your 29 gallon after it's cycled, just make sure it's a small one and then when it grows larger you can bring it back and get store credit for some other fish.
I'm sure there are more really great words of wisdom they've given me...I've probably just blocked most out of my memory. Thank goodness this forum exists for some REAL advice!
What "amazing" advice have you been given by your LFS???

The things a certain fish store/pet store told me and what I have over heard would give one nightmares and make you go postal. On the other hand, would be great for a comedy stunt on the comedy channel.

I was purchasing my first live rock...The owner is pulling it out of the tank. Oh look he says, you get a free little button anemone as he showed me the little guy. I was so excited. I made sure that the rock was on top and the tiny critter safe from harm. I was so proud when it divided and became two then three, and it was about to divide into another when I came home with a chocolate chip sea star that I was told was ...Reef safe... it proceeded to eat the little anemones as my husband and I watched in horror.
We returned the CC star and we were so angry we wanted the manager to pay us for the coral it ate...What kind of coral was it? A Button anemone I said. The manager never heard of it so we didn't get any money for them.
Fast forward years later, our "button anemone" we find out is AKA Majano
The CC star did us a service.
Other advice:
If I have ever cleaned my fish tank glass with Windex I needed to purchase a new tank.

I was in the pet store with my wife, some dude walks in looking at the SW fish. He then goes on to look at some tanks. The employee, an older guy, we will call him dumb dude, walks up and starts chatting with the curious impulse buyer guy.
To make a long story short, the impulse buyer guy is now the proud owner of a 75 gallon and has all the equitment, substrate, some rock, and fish. Yes..... fish. Not Damsels but nice fish.
Impulse buyer guy is told by dumb dude that he can put the water in, substreate, salt and rocks. Go ahead and get everything mixed in and throw the fish in. I might be mistaken but I think he had some corals too.
Class: What can we all learn from dumb dude and impulse buyer guy? Hmmmmmmm

Lol...... I was a rookie then too. but something in my gut told me "Keith dude, that's so not right!!" I have a freshwater 5 gallon with my betta in it. Hershey and it's basically the same idea when it comes to cycling the tank, IMO

I had same type of employee working at my local LFS. Anytime i had small problem, he would suggest to BUY something for $10-$20 that will fix it. HOWEVER, other good employees always told me to stay away from chemical, and try to fix everthing naturally, like water changes, less light.
That guy was fired last week.

wow.....it's amazing that there are so many people who have successful saltwater aquariums considering all of that bad advice given by some LFS stores. What did people do before this website was created!?!? I just started with salt water, and I have no idea what I'd do without it! (probably have multiple dead creatures and have waisted lots of money). I probably would also have a really pissed off husband who wishes I had chosen a different hobby (it's still cheaper than golf though!!)

If you have added that on a established and sustaining tank, there would be no need to cycle anymore but considering that you claimed everything to just be new, I suggest that you keep it to close watch and submit it to test by the end of another week so that you would know what the real deal would be.
After that, you should test how adding live rocks which probably would have some bacteria would be sustaining itself. And after checking for levels one last time, you can then be sure of it.

I am very curious where people get the idea that our closed systems just "stop" cycling? let me guess...... oh better not, to tired to debate.
