The Chronicles of my 12 Gallon Aquapod

that looks pretty good for initial CUC stock. you may want to hold off on those sexy shrimp until you get to around the 1 or 2 month mark after the cycle. they are very intolerant to high nitrates so they'll need stable water quality and they require a long and slow drip acclimation. great shrimp though, im thinking about getting a pair for myself.

alright well today, i go to turn on my lights and when i do, the fan is making this terribley awful and loud noise. i turned the lights on and off a bit and it is now running quietly
has anyone had this problem before?

sounds like the fan is a little unbalanced.
hasn't happend on my tank but it happens in computers i work on all the time. if its a continued thing call the manufacture or better yet just replace the fan with a ball bearing fan and while your in there you could even add a second fan. the aquapod hood has an additional unused 2 prong power lead. i think the stock fan in is 20mm.

well the noise stops after a little while. so ill let it be for now
but i was bored today so i tested the ammonia and nitrites
looks like the cycle is well underway, the ammonia is on its way down and the nitrites are sky high
and estimations as to how long until its over? lol

i was thinking of getting some chaeto and putting it in the back compartments. i read somehwere that it helps lower nitrates and phospates. is this true? does this sound like a good idea? and if i put it in now would it survive the last part of my cycle

chaeto is great, and yes, it reduces nitrates. it needs light, so make sure it has enough light in the back compartments. I dont see why you couldnt add some now. I have mine right in my DT because i dont have a back compartment, i have it wedged behind some rocks and the powerhead. I shake it once a week to get the debris out of it, then put it back.

i tested my water this morning and it was
ammonia- 0
nitrites- 0
nitrates- 0
so i thought i would be good for a CUC
the cleaner shrimp was looking great at the beginning. then literally, ten minutes later, i come back to the tank and hes belly up!
i called the fish store and they said if i provide a sample of my water they can give me a refund

so tested my water again today.
ammonia- barely detectable
nitrites- 0
nitrates- 0
i think the ammonia may have spiked because of a recent snail loss. but the hermits have been taking care of that.
another thing, the hermits are sooo messy! i think i need a clean up crew FOR my clean up crew.
i might order my first fish (tangaroa goby) sometime in the next week.
i am leaving for florida this weekend so hopefully the tank will survive!
