I've heard that a major part of the habit involves hand-to-mouth movement which is one reason you tend to eat/snack more. A toothpick replaces the cigarette with a low calorie chunk of wood to mess with. Not necessarily the most ideal habit, but it beats a cigarette.
I don't smoke, but I watched my dad (it finally killed him), older brother and sister battle smoking addictions. That was my reason to never start.
