Using a Pump as my a "overflow"?

The GPH rating for an overflow box is determined by the size of the overflow tubes.
As far as GPH, how much water do you want going through your sump? 4X is reasonable.

Personally, I would do the minimum that can still adequately feed your sump equipment. Heaters, skimmer, etc.

My water through my sumps is just about 20x. IMO it doesn't make sense to have equipment that filters 15 to 20x the size of your tank and feed it at a slower rate. To each his own.
My sumps even at 20x are still a smooth stream, I think that's the true key, have it where you can maintain a smooth stream for the macro in your sump to sway in the water. Anything creating waves in your sump is too much.

lol whats the minimum i would need, i would simply want to keep a good flow through the sump (Which i would have a skimmer and heater in) and the tank, and the return tube would basically give flow enough to skim the top of the tank to prevent that film stuff.

Agree.......but a lot depends on the design of the sump, which will dictate max flow amount through the sump. Most people I think shoot between 3x-5x turnover rate of the DT.

my sump is probably at about 1/2tank volume turnover per hour, or less.. here is why
1 it gives the filtration in the sump maximum time to filter
2 a bentic zone sump like mine needs low flow, the habitat of most benthic creatures that I am trying to put there are from low flow habitats.
3 I dont have a bigger pump and dont desire one.
since this is the first benthic style sump I have tried I can't really tell you the overall efficacy yet but time will tell.
