2 cents, if we can't use the word renegade, then can we not use the word central? What about reefs? Living? Monkey? Lounge? Land? Sep, I love ya, but maybe it would have been better to ask him kindly not to do that rather than simply delete the word.

'3V' thanks, but that does not give me a list of specific rules. Do you have another link that does?

there arent any other than what the mods want to enforce, and pretty much the no sales/trades (which is the ONLY rule i've seen posted by admin).
there are rules that have generally accepted, but even as a mod i couldn't find any and had asked for them, even tried to create some based on other websites and the "accepted" rules of the board.
you wont get a link, cause it's not there.

So it's one of those "unspoken" rules..that you are just supposed to know...cause once you do something everyone tells you that you "broke a rule"

No specific area for rules, but over the years, the mods have been given guidelines about how to run the forums.
Did you have a particular problem or concern about rules?

Yes. I had a discussion with '1journey' a year or so ago about how to give out information that might be of value to some people without violating the
'no direct links' rule. It was determined that it was ok to give people some helpful hints to help them research their question further...as in 'google the words melevs and reef to find a site to help construct a DYI sump/refugium'.
Seems I tried to help someone locate a fellow swf enthusiast that has left this site in that way and that was not acceptable. SEP did give me an explanation but I think, at times, swf.com, while they are our hosts, seem to be a little paranoid.

It can seem that way at times, but our problem is that if we start bending the rules, such as mentioning the acronym for another site, then it could easily become a spiraling problem. Personally, I know that the previous SWF owners was pretty tough about the rules, particularly mentioning other sites, and they had a point about it when SWF was a new site just getting started. Now, I'm not sure it matters. Most hobbyist know about R C and the other top sites, and either choose to visit them, or not. It doesn't have much to do with SWF. However, if mentioning the other sites spirals into members making referrals from here to there left and right, then that wouldn't be exactly fair, and its not something I want to be moderating either.
There is a topic going on now in the Aquarium having to do with attracting new members, and I can tell you that SWF is looking at that topic. I would suggest that you bring your concern up there.
SWF is unique among the top fish sites in that we are also a store that has to think about the business side of things first and foremost, so, with that in mind, maybe you can suggest a perspective that SWF can consider.

mentioning competitive forums has always been one of the generally accepted nono's of the site, and guessing from the post about MR X i'd think that's what you did. You know the bad blood about that site if this is the case and shouldn't have been surprised about the edit.

Actually, I was unaware of any bad blood. I had found that forum, and others like it, like many members of this forum. I like this forum. I register under all forums as Al Mc. I have less than 10 posts at any other forum I visit. I still consider this one home but do feel that there is a 'bunker mentality' or paranoia here sometimes.
I was following the unofficial rules to the best of my ability while giving out information to answer another forum member's question and when the post was altered merely asked to be shown the rule I had broken.

you actually have only one post on that site, so maybe you werent aware. things have calmed down, even to the point where there is a gift card to this forum's store being given away as a prize to a contest on that forum...

As I mentioned in PM to Al, you all miss half of the negative things that are posted on this site because we clean it up pretty quickly. We do the best that we can do as voluntary mods. We do get a lot of grief because sometimes it is not clear why we moderate something. It goes with the territory and we deal with it. We do our best to explain why we do what we do. Please, don't take any moderation personally. I look at the forum as a whole and do what I feel is best for the entire board.
