What Is This?

That gorgonian is not going to survive with the amont of flow you have on it. The fact that the cyano has been able to take hold is a very bad sign for it.

Gotta say I love the burgundy color. I think Spanko hit the nail on the head and provided some good information that is easy to understand (but basic mind you-more in depth research would be helpful...and honestly who doesn't find denitrification to be the most interesting thing in the world?).
Your tank looks pretty nice, keep up the good work. Sorry for all the crap we went through. Stick with this forum and ignore jerks like me

That looks to be some type of Rodophyta, red algae. It looks to be soft and branching, is it? These are all normal in our tanks, the red algaes and the red corallines.
For your information the cyano is a slime like blanket and if sucked up with the turkey baster will come up all together in much like a blanket.
I never let it get that thick I guess.
P.S. I was sooo delighted that my answer, thou not as technical, was the same as yours. Red harmless algae. You’re so knowledgeable, understanding and explaining so many things. To match your opinion made my day.

Yeah the turkey baster will not cause it to come up like that. But start a siphon with a hose like during a water change and suck it up and you will see it come up like that. It must have something to do with the constant velocity cause by the siphon.
