Never go cheap on the lights if you want coral. I upgraded 3Xs and it cost a fortune.
I run 2 X 175w MHs with 2 X 96w actinic…12K bulbs on my 90g. Nothing beats the looks of MH lights dancing in the water. Mine are on a pulley system, I also put some shades around the lights to block the light while we watch TV.. I can lower and raise the lights for maintenance or to control heat. Halides get hot.
With those lights I can have any corals I want. I made caves so I can have the corals that don’t care for lights as well.
Flower,
I like the Pulley Idea but id like to keep it all in the hood if possible. The whole hood would come off in one piece containing the lights. Aa I mentioned in the other post. I could built some T5 fixtures and still have them removable from the hood and all. Have you ever seen this done?
Yes, I did my first one like that. I hated it. Now keep in mind I'm older and female. The hood got so difficult to remove to do maintenance or anything it drove me LAZY, since I didn't want to mess with it. It had quick disconnect electric cables...Yes it disconnected from the ballast but the cables were so long and heavy, I had to get it all off the tank top and drag the lines behind me to the kitchen where I placed the lights on the table until I was ready to put it back on. I liked the look of my canopy. I'm not a do it yourself gal, so I couldn't alter my hood, just used what I had already with retrofit MH lights.
As you can see I kept my canopy, but removed the top lid and left it open, then I have the lights on pulleys, I also have shades I made to fit around the top because we watch TV and in a sitting position the lights bother my mother’s eyes.....man is it convenient. I raise the lights. Remove that wood front that weighs about 5 pounds and I can do anything I need to do.
Oh and by the way. The 2 X 175w with 2 X 96w actinic MH Coralife light system I have now, with a fan and glass shield cost $450.00 delivered. My retro lights cost almost $1000.00 by the time I was done..
