My father and I are in a disagreement over a stray dog I found today....
On my way home from doing errands this afternoon, I saw this man walking down my street carrying a little brown dog in his arms. He was going door to door trying to see if anyone was it's owner or knew where it came from. I thought this was very nice, considering the neighbors in this area really don't speak to one another.
About 10 minutes later, this dog is on my front lawn. I look around, the man is gone. He couldn't find it's owner so he just let it go roaming around my street again. I was horrified. I live on a very dangerous street and cats and dogs get killed in front of my house quite often. I couldn't imagine someone doing this if my dog got loose.
So I took her into my yard and chained her, took some pictures of her and walked around the neighborhood for 3 hours trying to find it's owner. No one has ever seen this dog before. I came home, and decided that if she was going to be in my yard/house/anywhere near my dog, she needed to be flea dipped and checked out. I grew up in a house that bred dogs, etc, so at least I know what I'm looking at. I washed her, brushed her, cleaned out her ears, and placed her in a cage.
She is house broken, but doesn't know any commands and is getting along great with my dog (thank goodness because my dog doesn't like any other dogs!)
I gave up for this evening in the search for her owner, but did print some pictures and place them in peoples mailbox's with my phone number. No one ever really claims a lost pet around here though.
I called the pound, they won't take her, they're full. If I absolutely insist, they'll charge me $175, keep her for 2 days and then put her down if she's not claimed.
So, my dad thinks that I should just let her go again, and what happens happens. I just can't do this. I would be mortified if I found her flattened in front of my house in the morning. For the record, I don't live with my father, I live on my own w/ my husband, but my dad has strong opinions as to what I do, LOL, so it's not a matter of, "Well, it's his house."
What would you do?

I wouldn't let it go..... Someone went out of their way once for me to keep my dog safe until I found him.

If you are taking care of the dog at your house, then it is your business. Kudos to you for caring and the stray is one lucky dog. Sounds like you live in a crappy city, however.

+1.....I wouldn't either.....Just because the humane in me couldn't ..... It seems like it is well behaved, and as long as it is getting along with your other dog...there is no threat

Do you know what type of dog it is??

I do live in a terrible area! Everyone here is out for themselves, and doesn't give a damn about anyone else.

I really think that it's either a Brussels Griffon or a Norwich Terrier. She's really sweet, and she'll make me keep my house clean. She eats dirty socks and underwear, LOL

You can post up posters in the neighborhood and make sure the animal shelter takes a full description. It may be that he owner will see it or call the pound.

I did put up flyers, although I'm sure the kids will rip them all down by morning just like they do when people post Garage/Yard Sale signs. I gave a really good description to the pound and the 24hour vets near me. On Tuesday I'm going to get her scanned for a chip at my vet and have her checked out if I still have her then. I'm dropping off some pictures to the pound tomorrow.

we have 6 dogs and 4 are either pound dogs or strays that wandered to the house.more to love.if you can keep her which sounds like you want to anyway you should.she will love you for it.maybe you will get some good carma for it.its fricken sickening what some people can do to unwanted pets.always have some bs excuse to get rid of them.i wish bob barkers famous saying would sink in to the stupid people more often.

Yeah, now we just have to convince the husband that if we don't find it's owner, I'll take it. Rocky, our very spoiled dog, is a rescue. I have a special place in my heart for rescues.

Sweet dogs have a way of growing on you...hubby should come around, make him a nice dinner when you break the news and remind him of how tidy the place has to stay now..LOL.

Why not keep her, if you can support her financially..
Well, I'd like to try to find the family and I'd hope that if my dog every ran away someone wouldn't just keep him and would try to find the owner.
This philosophy of "It's a stray, why not just keep her," is the number one reason why most people are never reunited with their lost pets. Many pets that get lost become frightened and hide, etc, and in the process get filthy, making them look unkept and people who find them say, "This dog wasn't taken care of, I'm not going to look for it's owner," and keep it for themselves.
----
On a side note, I found the owner last night. The family is actually giving this puppy up for adoption because they've realized that she's more work than they can handle. I might adopt her if a friend of mine doesn't. I honestly don't want the responsibility of a second dog right now, but if no one takes her by the end of the month, I told the family I'd take her.

I agree, if the owner can at all be found to return the dog, then return it. What makes folks like you, Scotts and Meowzer special is that you will take the stray in and care for them until that day they are found a new home or the original master.

If it were me I would call animal control. "The pound is full" is not a valid reason for them to not pick up a stray. If they refuse I would call the County Clerk and ask her if she was aware that Animal Control has abandoned their obligation to the tax payers and then ask her when I should expect the dog to be picked up.
