Lois - you should just stick to RC lol. They worked for you for last 3 years or so right? ^^

Sorry, haven't been following these salt threads as closely as others but what is so wrong with just using reef crystals? It's pretty much readily available everywhere. Seems to me that inconsistencies occur in pretty much all of them.

I have not been really happy with things lately and thought I would try a different salt.....everyone raved about the aquavitro....WELL...see how that worked for me :(
The IO RC has been leaving a lot of residue also.....and well.....I thought I would experiment some

I think Lois just wanted to try something "better"
Personally, I have had the least amount of inconsistencies with AquaVitro. I hated Reef Crystals and Brightwells. If I had to rate salts, those would be the two at the top of my list for being the most inconsistent and not benefitting corals.

Yes, the reef crystals do the same and I have to take the ph's out and the pumps and clean them once a month. If anything, it reminds me that I have to keep up the husbandry skills to keep all my equitment up and running smoothly. Maybe it's just the Navy in me to keeping up with maint. check.
I would love to get the salinity but it's so expensive and i would more than likely get lazy.

Yeah KIEF...BUT then I started to think....is the RC leaving residue on my corals???? on the equip in the tank????? I just really think my corals and tank in general should look better then it does....I have done so many other things to make it better, why not try a better salt

So..... did you see any changes in your corals appearance when you used the salinity?
corals have a slime coat that would protect them right?
HMMMMMM got me thinking now

(LOL) and I skipped last week.....I should have enough to do one more with the salinity.....tomorrow I will find out how much SW I can make up......I want to finish it of course

I buy big buckets and I have one of these paint sticks from home depots that I use to stir the sand from the bucket itself prior to putting it into my mixing bucket and I have had pretty consistent results as of yet.
Lois - also look into coralife salt. I have always had great results with them as well.
Their price is really good too.

Coralife is TERRIBLE! I used to have issues with high alkalinity, and used Coralife only because their alk levels are disgustingly low.
But it's like anything in this hobby, what works for one, may not work for another. I have a local hobbyists who swears by Brightwell's salt. You couldn't pay me to use that stuff again...

Has anyone tried seachem reef? That is what I just ordered. Thought that I'd try a new salt after years of being a rc fan. I will let you know how my tank does with it.
Yeah, I just used a bunch of it to kill grass in my front yard.
lol, I was stuck with a pallet of it left over from my fish store. It's the salt I used when I sold saltwater. I never had any issues with it at all. High calcium and alkalinity, relatively stable conditions. No nitrate or phosphate... I liked it for the price.
