Which would be more beneficial?

I recently came into some money (which is unusual, being on unemployment, but very welcome!! lol) So, I was wondering which would be more helpful to add to my tank, a protein skimmer, or a uv sterilizer, and your thoughts on each. Thanks in advance!!

Definitiely...without a doubt......a protein skimmer....they are 100% beneficial to your tank..and IMO A NECESSITY
uv sterilizers IMO are not.....I highly doubt anyone would ever recommend a uv over a protein skimmer

Well, my thinking behind the uv sterilizer was I've battled ich twice already, because I got my tank used from someone who really didn't care about it. I was kind of thinking that would help keep my poor fish (and me) from having to go through all that again.
So, what kind of protein skimmer would you all recommend? It would have to be a hang on back style. I've really got no clue what I should be looking for, even though I've spent the last week reading about it. Thanks so much for your help!

I know it won't cure it, but I was thinking it would cut down the number of the nasty bugs, thus reducing the chances of my fish getting it again.
I have a 55 gallon tank.

LOL...Do not make the mistake of thinking your tank is ich-free if you did not either do hypo or leave the tank empty of fish for 6 weeks. Feeding the garlic and good foods only help make your fish "healthier" so they are able to fight off the parasite.....at the first sign of stress you will most likely see them again.....Just keep your water good, and keep up with the vitamins and such to keep your fish's immune system built up

Thanks so much meowzer, I was actually thinking about a cleaner shrimp already. I really appreciate all the advice.
Can corals and inverts make survive hypo?

N, from what I have read...they can not......and you are very welcome

Thinking a cleaner shrimp will remove or cure ich is wishful thinking as well. Ich has to go host free for at least 6 week. Sometimes a fish's own health can fight it off but doesn't mean they are cured.
Fish can survive hypo -- thats it but ich doesn't affect inverts or corals.

Reread post 11 where it implies you suggest a cleaner shrimp replaces UV for getting rid of ich. Oh I forgot to LOL too

I wasn't asking for financial advice, but thanks. My fiancee and I are perfectly stable, and my disposable income is all that's taken a hit.
