There are chain pickerel in lakes around here, they don't get very big, the largest I've caught was maybe 20", but they are great fun! In early spring, before they go deep for the summer, if you really burn anything white through the shallow coves, they will come out from no where to slam into it.
We also have a smaller pike, the redfin. They live in small creeks near the coast. They max out about 14", but they think they are the terror of the deep!
I've only caught a bowfin once, that was enough.
Just remember guys, if its not on a FLY, it doesn't count!
That is one NICE young tarpon. I've never caught tarpon on fly gear before. I once caught one on an ultralight spinning setup with 6lb mono (the old fashioned mono, thankyouverymuch), but it was a mangrove juvie....... barely 24 inches long. Still put up one heck of a fight on 6lb line! Getting it away from the mangroves was the real test.
How long did it take you to bring this guy to the boat?
Thanks!
That one was about 30lbs, didn't really take that long to land, maybe 10 mins or so. Two days earlier, I landed a 110lb (crappy pic of it though, mostly just the hole in the water it made when released) that took close to 45 mins to land. My knees were jelly for the next couple of hours.
A 24" Tarpon on 6lb line, even when not in mangroves is quite a feat! Congrats!
And just for the record, I am a hardware chucker when the job calls for it...
