Canada = C-eh! N-eh! D-eh! That's how I was taught to spell it.

Nice fish there, Slice! If I didn't know any better I'd say that thing looks like a kin to the Tarpon. Once they bite, hold on tight.

Why is it called Rat Mouth?
It's not. Boca Raton is short for Boca Ratones. Boca, meaning mouth in Spanish, has another older definition: A small inlet or bay. And Ratones can mean rat, but it also is a term to describe a thief, or a shady character.
"Mouth of the Rat" is a common mistranslation. It's original Spanish name was "Thieves Inlet." Ironically, the name was attributed to an area of Biscayne Bay somewhat further south than the area known as Boca Raton today. A lake just off the beach in the our area was mistakenly given the name "Lake Boca Raton" in the early 19th century, and the name managed to stick.
Rat's Mouth or Thieves Inlet. I'm not sure which one I want to claim as my home. If I choose "Thieves Inlet," do I get to talk like a pirate then? Arrrrrr!
ahhh, because thieves are rats? lol

There are chain pickerel in lakes around here, they don't get very big, the largest I've caught was maybe 20", but they are great fun! In early spring, before they go deep for the summer, if you really burn anything white through the shallow coves, they will come out from no where to slam into it.
We also have a smaller pike, the redfin. They live in small creeks near the coast. They max out about 14", but they think they are the terror of the deep!
I've only caught a bowfin once, that was enough.
Just remember guys, if its not on a FLY, it doesn't count!

That is one NICE young tarpon. I've never caught tarpon on fly gear before. I once caught one on an ultralight spinning setup with 6lb mono (the old fashioned mono, thankyouverymuch), but it was a mangrove juvie....... barely 24 inches long. Still put up one heck of a fight on 6lb line! Getting it away from the mangroves was the real test.
How long did it take you to bring this guy to the boat?

That's because it IS a tarpon.
Slice was just showin' off his mad flyfishing skills there..... and he's definitely got skills to bring in any tarpon on fly line.
Bowfin are freshwater fish, related to the Snakehead actually. They also have a swim bladder that can act as a "lung" so they can survive out of water for a while. They're not invasive like snakeheads, though.

Ahh, yes...well that makes sense then because that's what I thought at first. Deffinately takes mad skills to catch one of them on a fly. Must have been one heck of a battle, Slice! They're strictly catch and release down here. I think you're allowed to keep one per year if you purchase a an extra tag for them. Beautiful fish!

Thanks!
That one was about 30lbs, didn't really take that long to land, maybe 10 mins or so. Two days earlier, I landed a 110lb (crappy pic of it though, mostly just the hole in the water it made when released) that took close to 45 mins to land. My knees were jelly for the next couple of hours.
A 24" Tarpon on 6lb line, even when not in mangroves is quite a feat! Congrats!
And just for the record, I am a hardware chucker when the job calls for it...

I knew you were a "younger reefer" (under 30), just didn't think you were that young.
I know what you mean. I'm 27, and apparently that's "young" especially on my local forum and I get cr@p for my age all the time.

"you are only as old as you feel"
