Al, you look VEEERY relaxed there! How cold was the river when you went down?
This was about the 5th day on a week long rafting trip down the Grand Canyon a little over a year ago. The river water was cold...40-50 but the picture shows me in one of the off canyon sulfur type pools that were about 75 degrees. So, between the lack of sleep (sleeping on the ground each evening) and the warm water I was close to sleeping.

Oh I know it, Al. That pic was taken a few years back when I was still in Michigan. We were out on Lake Huron at the time fishing for salmon and walleye. But I know the pike can get pretty substantial, especially in some areas of Canada. Never did really get a chance to do much fishing up there. Would still love to head up there someday though.

I could get into canada, but I doubt they would let me back in, muh huh hah ha ha ha.
I am a catch and release guy. I love eating fish, especially when its prepared right. Is saranac lake not far enough north? Good fishing on that lake. Its where my daughter caught her first fish.

We should do a SWF.COM goes north fishing trip
That would be fun. It's a bit of a paradox isn't it? People who love to keep fish and yet love to catch them and eat them at the same time.

That would be a LOT of fun. I've never been fishing farther north than the Carolinas. Always wanted to go Walleye fishing, myself.
We don't really have pike down here, but we get a few chain pickerel from time to time. Caught a couple pickerel and bowfin last time I was at Okefenokee swamp a few years back, and I've actually seen a few small chain picks in the retention ponds all the way down here in Boca.

There are chain pickerel in lakes around here, they don't get very big, the largest I've caught was maybe 20", but they are great fun! In early spring, before they go deep for the summer, if you really burn anything white through the shallow coves, they will come out from no where to slam into it.
We also have a smaller pike, the redfin. They live in small creeks near the coast. They max out about 14", but they think they are the terror of the deep!
I've only caught a bowfin once, that was enough.
Just remember guys, if its not on a FLY, it doesn't count!

It's not. Boca Raton is short for Boca Ratones. Boca, meaning mouth in Spanish, has another older definition: A small inlet or bay. And Ratones can mean rat, but it also is a term to describe a thief, or a shady character.
"Mouth of the Rat" is a common mistranslation. It's original Spanish name was "Thieves Inlet." Ironically, the name was attributed to an area of Biscayne Bay somewhat further south than the area known as Boca Raton today. A lake just off the beach in the our area was mistakenly given the name "Lake Boca Raton" in the early 19th century, and the name managed to stick.
Rat's Mouth or Thieves Inlet. I'm not sure which one I want to claim as my home. If I choose "Thieves Inlet," do I get to talk like a pirate then? Arrrrrr!
