    major red slime outbreak AGAIN

Red Slime algae is really bacteria (cyanobacteria). This is not caused by phosphates. The natural way of ridding the tank of this is to first skim off as much as you can. Then do a 50% water change. Several smaller water changes will not work. You will never get the bacteria down low enough to...

Flake-spilled, algae bloom and bacterial bloom, help!

This is something I typed up on red slime. I would use the same procedures for your problem. This might have to be done a couple of times but should solve the problem. 30% water change was not enough. Also as this food degrades the process might have to be repeated untill tankk cycles. Good...

    RODI water storage help

I use a 55gal plastic barrel with a mag submersible pump in the bottem which runs all the time. I keep this in the garage. It pumps water from the bottem out the top and thru pvc pipe back into the barrel. With two valves and a tee I can close the water going back into the barrel and send it...

    help confused

A suggestion would be to do both. If you are going to have a deep sand bed then place half in tank then the rock then place the other half of the sand. This way the rock is not sitting right on the glass but is surrounded by the sand which makes it very stable. I would suggest at least 3-4in of...

    Curing Live Rock

I believe you are correct. Do the water changes. I think most people do not do large enough water changes when working on a problem. BurnNspy (do not know where he went to...Used to be on here all the time) showed the numbers one time and I lost them. But two 15% water changes do not equal a 30%...

Scuba read this!! :) and others with Clowns living in Corals

Thanks for the post. I have an anemone but my clowns still like the bubble. They have been there for about a year. I do wish they would move though. The bubble does close up sometimes because of them.

    skimer?

I do not turn my skimmer off but if you feel you must and agree with the above post this would be a good time to clean the skimmer and leave off till ready to restart. This way none of the old trash will get back into the water.

    Rock crab: the true killer

One chance you have is to make a crab trap out of a plastic coke bottle. By cutting the top section off where the funnel shape ends you can turn that part inside out and put into the bottom half. insert bait and place near where you think he is at night. You can use bait shrimp or squid for bait...

    HUGE crab, what to do

There are different size coke bottles and you can modify the size of the top...but start small so he will not be able to get out.. also you can place some sand in the bottom to weight it down and lean on the rocks to make it harder to get out. good luck...

decision between peppermint shrimp and arrow crab

Had an arrow for short period of time. My shrimp kept turning up missing. Then I watched the arrow catch and eat one. No more arrow. Maybe just my bad luck. They look neet but I will not take the chance again.

getting a ro/di unit need help

I might suggest getting a plastic 55gal barrel cost about $50 and a small submersible power head. you can also get several 5gal plastic water jugs from your local spring water supplier. By doing this I fill up the barrel when it is needed then shut off the water maker saving the filters. the...

    live rock

The gentleman is correct you do not have to have live sand. I does cost good bit more. It will however have some good bacteria & less dust. Less apt to cloud tank unless reg sand is cleaned real good. I have heard the finer the better.

    Night light

I just took two 40w blue party bulbs (one on each end of tank-6ft) and put on timer so it comes on when main lights go out. Do not know if this is correct but cheap(get everything at lowes) and allowes me to watch tank at night.
