Ok thanks for all your help. What kind of clean up crew should i be looking at? I like the look of shrimp, but im not sure if i can support them lighting wise. It has a regular hood with the flourescent bulb in it. Snails are for sure coming, and i was concidering hermit crabs, but now not so...

Refractometer. After reading throught the 101 things for beginners thread, i realized i make alot of mistakes...

    First fish/ Ammonia spike?

Don't take this for truth but i wouldn't think that 2 small fish like that could cause a big spike in a tank that size. I would IMAGINE... that would make a very small spike for a couple days before the biological filter catches up with them.

Kinda long but i think im one the right track.

Ok so im looking for 1.026sg, But if i can't really measure it with the hydrometer im using, how can i get that. Whats that thing called.... Its on the tip of my tongue but i can't remember the name of it. As for the live rock. Well this pretty much tapped my budget. Im down to $13 in my account...

Kinda long but i think im one the right track.

Ok i have had my 30 gallon tank set up at about the end of january or the beginning of febuary. I have 20 pounds of argonite (i think thats what its called, the black sand stuff) and a couple pounds of LR. I recently started recording all my results for the testing so i could see a difference in...

Ok tested my tank ph, alk, nitrite etc. Need help

Im new to this too, but i think i can help you out, with an exception to an alk test becuase my test kit didn't come with that. Ph- 8.0 to 8.2 Ammonia- 0 (No higher) Nitrite- 0 (No higher) Nitrate- 0 (But a fish only with live rock tank can take a reading of 10 or so) Temperature- Between 78...

    How important are backgrounds?

Can someone explain how to post pics directly to this thread. I just took some pics with out a background, with a blue background, and with a black background, and i wanna see what everyone thinks look better.

    How important are backgrounds?

Well i have only seen them painted on the outside, im pretty sure if you paint the inside the tank is pretty un-useable for fish anymore. Paint gives off toxins forever. Kinda like with boa constrictors (another big hobby of mine), you can not use cedar becuase it gives them a resperatory...

    How important are backgrounds?

I don't want to spraypaint my tank Becuase once i get the hang of taking care of a saltwater tank ill be switching it to a bigger tank and making this one a freshwater tank again, but i really haven't heard anykind of information about if a background is important or not. I have noticed that...

First Thread - First 20g - First Marine [Need Help]

When i started my 30 gallon, i didn't add a heater thinking that if i don't have any fish, the heater isn't that important. I failed to realize that cold water doesn't disolve salt like warm water does. About an hour after i added a heater, the water was crystal clear.

    Couple easy questions.

So i have decided against getting a lionfish for now. Just too much of a bioload for me to deal with since i work odd hours and don't want to end up having to moniter this tank for hours a day. Are there any other interesting fish that are good for beginners? I don't really want to have damsels...

    Couple easy questions.

Ok so the shrimp and snails don't count towards the bioload. The more the better then i guess. Also, im not done adding lr, i want it around 30-35 pounds for this tank. I would really like a lionfish, but if its going to be hard to take care of for a beginner fish, then ill try something easier...

    what is Cycling a Tank

Hey thats a pretty good explanation, ill have to fav this thread so i can read that later while im testing stuff. I was under the impression that once the ammonia drops your tank is cycled. I didn't realize thats why my nitrites went up after my ammonia fell. So once my nitrites fall, and it...

    Couple easy questions.

Ok my tank (30 gallon - 15 pounds live rock at the moment) has been cycling for almost 2 weeks now. Yesterday i went to a lfs and bought a Nano skimmer. It was broke before i even got to use it, so i took it back. They would only give me store credit, so i bought a couple more pounds of live...
